Liberty caps in SF Bay Area?
    #26401951 - 12/26/19 06:05 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
Location is Portola Valley, CA (southern San Mateo County)
Habitat is a grove of planted mature redwoods on private property.
Growing on redwood leaf litter and probably other mulch materials and wood chips.
Some sunlight because the grove isn't all that dense.

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
Pale, not attached. Don't seem to be notched.

Stem:
About 3mm thick, pale, stringy. Seems solid but easily pulled apart.

Cap:
Gee, looks like a liberty cap with a little nipple on it.

Spore print color:
Very dark brown, close to black.

Bruising:
Nothing particularly visible ()

Other information:
Smells delicious, and very much like P. Cubensis grown at home. Fruiting along what appears to be the edge of a 20m radius circle.

In the spore print picture, the plastic lid in background is about 75mm diameter.

It's been raining a lot in the last few weeks, and mushrooms are fruiting all over. None quite like this, though.

There are a lot of these! Pictures of liberty caps I've seen show them growing onsey-twosy, not in a dense flush like this.

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty certain they're not liberty caps.

Psathyrella or a closely related genus.

You are not likely to find liberty caps as far south as SF, and in any case the habitat is wrong.
