If so, I guess it should smell phenolic and not pleasant, like OP states?

The spore print turned dark brown and the mushroom developed a phenol smell over night. I agree it is probably Agaricus deardorffensis. Thanks all for helping out!

Could also be A. californicus I guess. But nothing you'd like to eat in any case.

I have also seen a specimen from Santa Cruz except it was growing under a redwood along a disturbed path. It stained yellowish at first but turned reddish over time and it wasn't very phenol smelling until a few hours later. The old books have this named as Agaricus praeclaresquamosus. I haven't seen A. californicus with as darker gray scales in the area before.

It may be a royal girl, but the scientific name is either Agaricus deardorffensis or Agaricus buckmacadooi.  Both are toxic, and differ in their size and staining reactions.  Agaricus augustus has yellow rather than black scales, and boxy shaped cap when young and a stem which is floccose below the ring.

I agree only if it's a mixed forest with nearby conifer trees, but op only states maple which is a hardwood.

Edit: mj001jk check out some of the really young immature buttons to see if the gills are white or pinkish at that stage. If machine elf is correct they will be white then pink turn brownish black.
