Is Christmas the best Holiday?

Religion and commercialization aside I think every holiday has it's secular meaning. Which holiday is best? Christmas? Halloween? I think those would be the top two answers.

NYE has always been the most important/special for me. Something about finishing one and starting anew. I feel the same about midnight being my favourite time of day.
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

Meh, social engineering. Why do we need to set aside a day or period of time to devote certain activities to? Why not have family/friend gatherings all the time? Why not devote every day to love and kindness? Why not reflect every day on what is good and what can be done better? It wouldn't take up all your time to do this and I have a hard time seeing a downside to it.

that's the best, but it is not in most cases sustainable, somebody has to work, usually all week, often quite a few members must work. so the weekend becomes the rest and rejuvenation celebration time. (sabbath can be considered a sustainable ritual)

The best holiday, by far, is 4/20, especially here in Canada.

Because ritual is an important component of the human psyche. Now this ritual component 'appears' to be manifested by some chimpanzees. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/mysterious-chimpanzee-behavior-may-be-evidence-of-sacred-rituals/ ; https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/chimps-may-be-performing-rituals-shrine-trees-180958301/
Of course to be fair, there are detractors to this hypothesis: https://www.newsweek.com/chimp-throw-rocks-trees-communication-1477637
Ritual alters consciousness. One can easily see this around Christmas time in particular when multitudes are influenced by fond childhood reminiscences which sometimes flows outward to others in the form of kindness or generosity. Ritual has always been intended to alter consciousness. The Christmas tree or the big illuminated balls that descend a shaft high above the people on New Year's Eve are both forms of an Axis Mundi, a world axis around which people gather around. In Russia and Europe the same is true of the Maypole. Such structures have been around for unknown millennia because at the deepest levels the human psyche probably has not changed since time immemorial.

Not for the pine trees, but yes for big business.
http://changingminds.org/explanations/emotions/happiness/setpoint_happiness.htm
"There is a 'Set Point' theory of happiness and well-being that assumes we each have a fixed 'average' level of happiness around which our day-to-day and moment-to-moment happiness varies.
This is expressed in the idea of temperament, mood and emotion, where our natural temperament is stable, with slowly moving moods and momentary changes in experienced emotions.
Discussion Set Point theory is supported by research such as Brickman et al. (1978), where it was shown that people who win the lottery, after the initial euphoria has died down, are no happier than people with spinal cord injuries. "

If it gives me the day off work then the holiday rocks...if it don't it sucks. I do appreciate Columbus day because we get to celebrate pirates.

A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

The new year was in March, pretty much everywhere for a few thousand years.
December 31, 1750 was followed by January 1, 1750 (under the "Old Style" calendar, December was the 10th month and January the 11th) March 24, 1750 was followed by March 25, 1751 (March 25 was the first day of the "Old Style" year) December 31, 1751 was followed by January 1, 1752 (the switch from March 25 to January 1 as the first day of the year) September 2, 1752 was followed by September 14, 1752 (drop of 11 days to conform to the Gregorian calendar) http://libguides.ctstatelibrary.org/hg/colonialresearch/calendar

i would just like to completely disagree with this. there is no putting the commercialization aside, thats what most holidays are for. for me there is not much real meaning in any of them anymore other than to give you something to look forward to buying. most (western) holidays come from old euro pagan tradition
samhain saturnalia saturday lupercalia "Lupercalia was an ancient pagan festival held each year in Rome on February 15. ... Unlike Valentine's Day, however, Lupercalia was a bloody, violent and sexually-charged celebration awash with animal sacrifice, random matchmaking and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility."
Etc..........
