Dog Food and Verm Cakes

I haven't found BRF locally, so I order it online. I recently made some agar plates with dog food and they're working phenomenally. So I decided to make some dog food cakes instead of BRF. I ground the dog food up in a blender and added it to damp verm then added that to a half-pint jar.
I'm curious about what you guys think. I'm going to attempt to create a poll. They were noc'd with spores so we should see results within about 10 days. I'll report back once I see growth.

Dog food has meat. Never thought of that, not sure how I feel about it.

Could you tell us what brand, or post an ingredient list? And with what strain did you inoculate?
I think it'll probably work. My biggest worry would be that because of some of the fat in the dog food going rancid and the flavoring compounds breaking down you may not notice if you start getting off smells from your cakes. There's probably also food coloring in the dog food; so between changing the smell and coloring your verm, it may be harder to identify contamination.

Dry dog food is what you wanna use. It's used in agar recipes and I've seen other growers have success with it in cakes, blocks and bulk.

I contacted the guy that used it. He grew some cubes and Lion's mane using it as supplementation.

Cool! I'm still a noob so I'll have to look up supplementation. These are probably the last cakes I'll make. I'm moving to grain after this first grow.

If you have a blender to grind the dog food, you can use the same blender to grind BRF. It comes out coarse, but it works just fine. Its how I do it when I need BRF.

Ok, the results are in...
Drum roll please...
The answer is YES myc grows great on verm and dog food cakes!! of the two noc points one is larger than a quarter and the other is pea size.
the dog food agar is a different story tho. the growth has slowed considerably compared to my pda plates. But that might be due to poor AE.

I didn't. I ground it up in a blender and used it the same as you would BRF.
