Habitat:
Found in souther California in humus under a line tree.

Gills:
None, spongy material.

Stem:
Thick and somewhat stout. Orangish-reddish color. No discernible vulva.

Cap:
Roundish. Somewhat slimy, it had previously rained the night before. 3”-4”

Spore print color:
N/A

Bruising:
Nothing noticeable.

Other information:
Growing in small groups near each other.

I don't like your lighting in the pictures...that being said. I would 99.9% say that fungi is a Suillus caerulescens aka. the Fat Jack bolete.

Does it smell??

That is a Douglas fir associate, and I don't see any Douglas fir needles in the photo.


This is suillus bellinii, a rare species described from Italy.

Suillus, although I would wager they are distinct from the rare Italian varieties.
I found several of of hear growing in Roseville, CA. Note the reddish scabers.


Also, peeling the skin off the top of the caps stained my fingers reddish for a few days. My nose, too. I suppose I really enjoyed smelling them.

I would also wager that they are edible, nutritious, and taste of bland slugs.
