Did ya build or buy a flow hood

As the title states, did ya build or buy a flow hood? I would love to make one however I dont have the necessary equipment to do so. I might be able to convince someone to do the labor for some cash. I know real flow hoods are ridiculously expensive but is it worth not having a jimmy rigged box?

I’m building my own. It’s going to cost me about 600 instead of 1200 so I’d say it’s worth it.

You can make a really nice home made one with nothing but a drill, screws, and caulk.
Get your lumber at HD or lowes and have them cut all the pieces to the correct size for you.

Exactly what I did. The cuts weren’t perfect so I did sand it down a bit and made it work. Tested with a quality, but inexpensive anemometer and then did the agar test plate deal. Also have had nothing but success. Def worth saving some extra money and learning a new skill if you have a little bit of time and patience.

I bought one. If you keep an eye out deals can be found. I bought this cabinet on ebay auction for $310.00 + $400 freight ship with liftgate to the door for residential delivery but still only $710 total

I’ve built three now. 18x24 (sold), 24x24 , and 24x36.
Wouldnt recommend building smaller than 18x24 for jars or 24x24 for bags. You can do bags on their side with the 18x but its not ideal. 12x24 only good for agar work or LC2g in qts maybe g2g with pints.
24x24 if you want to move it around at all. Any bigger you need a friend and a truck lol.
Buy the filter new, spend the $$$ then find a blower in an hvac graveyard or second hand store if you have a farm/antiques style one locally. Look online to see what models work with your filter and write down the serial numbers. You can usually find 300$ dayton blowers used for 50$ or less. I found one for 15$ recently that retails new for over 400$,

All really good feedback One of the resources that I do lack is a drill, but might be able to bum one. How big is too big is most people opinion? I'd rather have too much space than not enough. Leave less room for error ya know

I made one out of plywood, screws, caulk, a furnace blower and a filter. The filter and blower are the expensive parts.

Shit if you’ve got the money/space and dont plan on moving it build a 3x2 or 4x2. If you live in a smaller spot 2x2 is probably better. Depends how much myco work you actually do and whether you want to do bags or not. I got by with my 18/24 for a couple years before I went bigger. But now that I have a 2x3’ my 2x2 almost feels too small again, but I do gourmets on a small commercial scale. Grain to bag transfers weekly. You might mot need that..
Its a powerful tool just make sure you arent using a sledge when a tack-hammer would do the job.
Buy a drill homie they’re under 100$ For a pretty nice one and they come in handy.

I built one 24×24. Total is 25 1/2 by 25 1/2 front and 30in length. It's big but I love it. Total cost close to $600.

I have 💯 success rate so far. Wife was mad at cost but now she happy at clean cultures.
Wish: filter was minipleat Filter was 2×4 Would of built smaller plenum
So to sum it up, get mini pleat, get bigger thin filter and it's heavy so don't build bigger than needed

Lighter test honestly did not look too promising. At 3" and closer it would flicker but not quite extinguish. 3-6" it'd bend 50 degrees. I made my plenum on the small side maybe this is why? Fan is choked off like 40%
At any rate I have 4 bags at over 50% in just 6 days. Two bags got a full Q two got half Q WBS. I probably put $600 into this flowhood and the babe weighs 100lb easy. Made the plenum smaller to hopefully make it easier to move, which was clearly not solid logic

built my first recently.
new 24x24x6 filter, $200 new two-speed blower, $200 single sheet of plywood, $50 pre-filter, fasteners and materials for sealing, wiring, etc. ~$50 sixteen hours labor, $320 freedom to work unhindered with essentially zero contamination rate, priceless.

I built a 12x12 for around 125$ with a 90$ filter from ebay, a free blower from my neighbor's old furnace, a sheet of 1/4" plywood, a few pcs of 1"x1" for the frame, some screws and silicone, and a power cord from a dead appliance. It's small but it's ok for agar work, I literally just got my first contaminated plate, after a couple hundred or so, on a plate I dropped on the floor before I wrapped it, so it definitely works. I'd love to have a larger hood but so far this one is working well enough for my needs that I'm not super motivated to spend several hundred on a larger one.

I'm in the 12x12 club as well.
my 71€ (80 USD) 12x12 99.999 Flow
10 for the fan used 40 for the filter (old model but never used) from Flee Bay 30 for the wood
Tuned flow with pre-filter thickness. I don't do bulk so works fine for small genetics work. Wish I never sold my 24x24 over a decade ago...

As much as I really want one, I have been putting off building a FH mostly due to cost. SAB is doing fine for now, just wish I had more room to work. However,at around $80, that is way more doable than the $450-$600 I see most people saying. May have to start dumpster diving looking for a blower.

Time vs money. Just wait to get good deals on everything.
Blowers = Ebay, craigslist, contact local HVAC companies that do high volume and see if they have old Daytons (Shade pole blowers) laying around they will part with cheap. Just tell them you want it for an exhaust fan for your shop. Mine came from a guy that used to use it for exhaust in a "grow room" I am sure weed. Was just sitting in his shed covered in dust.
Check electric motor(well pumps, ect) repair companies. Some times people don't want to pay for the repair and just leave it.
Ebay Blowers
Ebay 99.99 HEPA Filter 24x24x6 - Wants 100 Offer him 50 and fix the holes.

eBay Flanders Filter 2x4 $250 or 2x2 $100 Dayton 1tdu2 $275
You can get the rest of what u need at Home Depot for $50 or so So u can build a big ass hood for less than $600 I’d say build one.

Not my idea but I'm in love. Changed everything for me. Never needed anything else. Filters are $20 but I've never needed to change it. I just keep it clean. I can get in and out of the same pitri a handful of times before anything goes bad. Kinda ghetto but I like that it doesn't look like a sab and it rolls up small for storage. Can be as big or as small as the bag I put on it. I work with gallon jars all the time no prob. Success depends on what I allow into it.
That's so cool you built yours so inexpensive. If I had a place for a permanent flow hood I'd be down. Not there yet but maybe next year.

I’m gonna build mine, 24 by 24 I reckon, get a minipleat so only has pressure drop of 80pa to achieve laminar flow, add a bit for a pre-filter, so i reckon I need to deliver around 400cfm at about a pressure of 120-130ish Pa? Does that sound about right or have I missed something?
Been reading loads and trying to get the theory straight in my head before committing to buy...

I’m extremely doubtful of FPs filters is the only reason I haven’t bought one yet. Been going through the headache of distributors since most reputable company’s wont sell for home use and only for company use.

Just source the materials from somewhere else, no need to buy the stupid expensive FP. I built my 24x16 FH costing less than $350 with all parts. For the fan, forget the blowers, they are so expensive 350 wtf... Just pick up any inline fan which can deliver that airflow under pressure.

I’ve built three hoods with FP filters. No issues with the filters and their packing job is top notch.
Wouldnt buy anything else from them but they keep filters in stock whereas most distributers make them to order so they can take a couple weeks and I’m impatient af.

I was super impressed with the packing too absolutely no way to get damaged unless was hit by a car in the middle of the road! LOL (I do buy his enriched agar too since I'm small scale)

FP does a top notch job with packing and shipping for sure, I've built 2 hoods, one from FP and one from ebay.
Ebay hood 2'x2' filter

Decent hood. The order came with 2 filters but one was damaged i shipping.
FP 2'x3' filter

If I were to build another I'd go with a FP filter again.

You got some serious research to do you’re gonna need a fan about 8-10x that size.
Static pressure on FP hoods is 1.0 but even at 0.0 your fan wouldnt be strong enough...

180cfm at open air is no where near enough for a 2x2 filter. You need one that blows ~1000cfm at open air and 400cfm at 1.2"sp

Personally, I'd scoop it. Even if you dont end up using it you can resell that for some chump change to throw in your pocket. Might serve a use later another idea. New, for $30, is a fucking steal.

Yeah I love mine. So far I done jars and agar work, printing and spawning, and cloning in front of my hood. I want to build another now. Mine is 24×24×6 with a Dayton 1tdu2. I use two pre filters with a thick fluffy expandable one unraveled and lain on top. Works perfect. So far 4 out 30 had bacteria. The batches before this last one I didn't lose a single plate . Jar were bacterial cause my oat prep game. Building was fun

I rock the SAB from a tub purchased from Walmart and the holes were made with a lid from one of my cooking pots - hasn't failed me

SABs are amazing but I’m not doing 8 hours of work again kneeling on my floor in one

For the fan, forget the blowers, they are so expensive 350 wtf... Just pick up any inline fan which can deliver that airflow under pressure.
I use inline fan for 1+ years now, I built my first and only flowhood, decided on using one to cut down on costs a bit...
I based mine on this build : http://www.fungifun.org/English/Flowhood
Of course it seems pretty easy to get used blowers from hvac companies if you phone around but I probabl woulda never done that anxiety and shit
FWIW, my inline fan (purchased on amazon) had a chart with the flow and pressure curve, so I was able to determine which one I needed very easily.
This company had graph for every model they had, I ended up needing a 12" one, but my filter is like 11" depth

I bought mine and have zero regrets. To be fair, I'm older, have a great job, and disposable income. Looks like the cost difference between prebuilt and DIY is less than my hourly rate, so I'm fine with not trying to do it myself.

What was the model that you bought? I have been having such drama finding a replacement...

Any reason why the motor from this wouldn't work for a small hood?
https://www.homedepot.com/p/WEN-5-7-Amp-660-CFM-Dust-Collector-with-12-Gallon-Bag-and-Optional-Wall-Mount-3401/304660870
Pumps out 660 cfm without a filter, so should be enough for a 24x18 or maybe even 24x24 filter to still get 100 fpm flow, right? At $96 new, it's much cheaper than most of the others being discussed, but maybe there's a downside I'm not seeing?
I also spent a stupid amount of time tonight looking up inline duct hepa filters that you could attach between the motor and the bag here. Seems like there's potential for a super-economical solution there (since there's a smaller and thus cheaper filter and a pretty inexpensive motor), with the end of the bag cut off (or maybe just some holes cut out to work and see inside) and all the work taking place inside there. Basically it's the same idea as the shmoovbox (sp?) but slightly less hacked-together.

After asking on here for advice on buying one, all I got was 'build one, it's cheaper'
so I bought this: https://www.wolflabs.co.uk/laboratory-products/laminar-flow-cabinets-horizontal/purair-lf/10181344
It's great and they gave me a free UV upgrade. Way less stress than building one and it only cost me £2100 delivered ;-)
I'm all about DIY normally but I didn't want to sink hundreds of money into something that would have taken me weeks /months to source parts then make and would have been shite because I'm no good at carpentry.

$2753?! Holy fuck! I'll use a SAB for the rest of my life before that. Don't get me wrong, if you got the cash and are good with spending it, more power to ya man, but again, holy fuck!

Yeah it's a butt clenching amount of money but the stress avoided is totally worth it! Poured 50 plates, left them for 3 weeks at room temp and only one was contaminated. Took me an hour, in a SAB, jeez, I don't even want to think about it.

Are y'all using regular Hepa filters or minipleat/micro pleat. The latter seem thinner in general and with less S.P.

I’ve just ordered a mini pleat and I believe edmunter uses one as well with no issues
