Did ya build or buy a flow hood

As the title states, did ya build or buy a flow hood? I would love to make one however I dont have the necessary equipment to do so. I might be able to convince someone to do the labor for some cash. I know real flow hoods are ridiculously expensive but is it worth not having a jimmy rigged box?

I’m building my own. It’s going to cost me about 600 instead of 1200 so I’d say it’s worth it.

You can make a really nice home made one with nothing but a drill, screws, and caulk.
Get your lumber at HD or lowes and have them cut all the pieces to the correct size for you.

Exactly what I did. The cuts weren’t perfect so I did sand it down a bit and made it work. Tested with a quality, but inexpensive anemometer and then did the agar test plate deal. Also have had nothing but success. Def worth saving some extra money and learning a new skill if you have a little bit of time and patience.

I bought one. If you keep an eye out deals can be found. I bought this cabinet on ebay auction for $310.00 + $400 freight ship with liftgate to the door for residential delivery but still only $710 total

I’ve built three now. 18x24 (sold), 24x24 , and 24x36.
Wouldnt recommend building smaller than 18x24 for jars or 24x24 for bags. You can do bags on their side with the 18x but its not ideal. 12x24 only good for agar work or LC2g in qts maybe g2g with pints.
24x24 if you want to move it around at all. Any bigger you need a friend and a truck lol.
Buy the filter new, spend the $$$ then find a blower in an hvac graveyard or second hand store if you have a farm/antiques style one locally. Look online to see what models work with your filter and write down the serial numbers. You can usually find 300$ dayton blowers used for 50$ or less. I found one for 15$ recently that retails new for over 400$,

All really good feedback One of the resources that I do lack is a drill, but might be able to bum one. How big is too big is most people opinion? I'd rather have too much space than not enough. Leave less room for error ya know

I made one out of plywood, screws, caulk, a furnace blower and a filter. The filter and blower are the expensive parts.

Shit if you’ve got the money/space and dont plan on moving it build a 3x2 or 4x2. If you live in a smaller spot 2x2 is probably better. Depends how much myco work you actually do and whether you want to do bags or not. I got by with my 18/24 for a couple years before I went bigger. But now that I have a 2x3’ my 2x2 almost feels too small again, but I do gourmets on a small commercial scale. Grain to bag transfers weekly. You might mot need that..
Its a powerful tool just make sure you arent using a sledge when a tack-hammer would do the job.
Buy a drill homie they’re under 100$ For a pretty nice one and they come in handy.

I built one 24×24. Total is 25 1/2 by 25 1/2 front and 30in length. It's big but I love it. Total cost close to $600.

I have 💯 success rate so far. Wife was mad at cost but now she happy at clean cultures.
Wish: filter was minipleat Filter was 2×4 Would of built smaller plenum
So to sum it up, get mini pleat, get bigger thin filter and it's heavy so don't build bigger than needed

Lighter test honestly did not look too promising. At 3" and closer it would flicker but not quite extinguish. 3-6" it'd bend 50 degrees. I made my plenum on the small side maybe this is why? Fan is choked off like 40%
At any rate I have 4 bags at over 50% in just 6 days. Two bags got a full Q two got half Q WBS. I probably put $600 into this flowhood and the babe weighs 100lb easy. Made the plenum smaller to hopefully make it easier to move, which was clearly not solid logic

built my first recently.
new 24x24x6 filter, $200 new two-speed blower, $200 single sheet of plywood, $50 pre-filter, fasteners and materials for sealing, wiring, etc. ~$50 sixteen hours labor, $320 freedom to work unhindered with essentially zero contamination rate, priceless.

I built a 12x12 for around 125$ with a 90$ filter from ebay, a free blower from my neighbor's old furnace, a sheet of 1/4" plywood, a few pcs of 1"x1" for the frame, some screws and silicone, and a power cord from a dead appliance. It's small but it's ok for agar work, I literally just got my first contaminated plate, after a couple hundred or so, on a plate I dropped on the floor before I wrapped it, so it definitely works. I'd love to have a larger hood but so far this one is working well enough for my needs that I'm not super motivated to spend several hundred on a larger one.

I'm in the 12x12 club as well.
my 71€ (80 USD) 12x12 99.999 Flow
10 for the fan used 40 for the filter (old model but never used) from Flee Bay 30 for the wood
Tuned flow with pre-filter thickness. I don't do bulk so works fine for small genetics work. Wish I never sold my 24x24 over a decade ago...

As much as I really want one, I have been putting off building a FH mostly due to cost. SAB is doing fine for now, just wish I had more room to work. However,at around $80, that is way more doable than the $450-$600 I see most people saying. May have to start dumpster diving looking for a blower.

Time vs money. Just wait to get good deals on everything.
Blowers = Ebay, craigslist, contact local HVAC companies that do high volume and see if they have old Daytons (Shade pole blowers) laying around they will part with cheap. Just tell them you want it for an exhaust fan for your shop. Mine came from a guy that used to use it for exhaust in a "grow room" I am sure weed. Was just sitting in his shed covered in dust.
Check electric motor(well pumps, ect) repair companies. Some times people don't want to pay for the repair and just leave it.
Ebay Blowers
Ebay 99.99 HEPA Filter 24x24x6 - Wants 100 Offer him 50 and fix the holes.

eBay Flanders Filter 2x4 $250 or 2x2 $100 Dayton 1tdu2 $275
You can get the rest of what u need at Home Depot for $50 or so So u can build a big ass hood for less than $600 I’d say build one.
