Possibly edible as food, but not psychoactive if that's what you mean.

I mean to eat as food, any idea of the exact species?

Beware of any that bruise yellowish and smell like chemicals or a medicine cabinet.

The toxic species of Agaricus bruises a prominent chrome yellow which fades after a while.
And as said, the odor will put you off, if not in the field, then most likely when you throw them
in the frying pan. So I assume this is an edible species, although I can't tell which, I'm not well
versed in NZ species.

I would describe the smell (of the poisonous ones) as a kind of inky smell, something like the smell of a permanent marker, but maybe not quite as pungent. If you don't have a great sense of smell, then hand it to someone who you know has a good nose and ask them what they think.

The few times I've found A. xanthodermus (they don't grow where I live) I have actually found the smell to be quite like cat piss. :tongue2:

Having never owned a cat, and never been curious enough to try to smell it, I don't actually know what cat piss smells like, but I imagine it's not pleasant!

I'd bet you've smelled it although you probably didn't know what it was. Pungent, stingy, with a touch of ammonia.
Maybe human piss would smell the same if we lived on a strict diet of whiskas, rodents and fish.

Speaking of cats, I recommend this movie review from The Guardian:
