Is this potentially Cubensis??

Hi there,
Is this potentially Cubensis??
I took this dun from a farm paddock in northern NSW and started watering it in my backyard since the heat and humidity has increased. I don't want to pick it yet. It has black gills. I'll check spore print and bruising when I pick it.
Thanks, Goldtopper

Looks more like a Panaeolus species. Let it mature a bit, but not too much, before you pick it and take gill shots and a spore print.

Thanks for the reply.
Panaeolus cyanescens perhaps? I will take more pics after I have picked it.

In my experience, the striate stem speaks against P. cyanescens.
I don't think this is an active Panaeolus, and Doc9151's suggestion is convincing.

As far as I know, being a subtropical species, they are more common in the northern parts of NSW towards the border of QLD, apparently more so in the coastal regions. Where Psilocybe cubensis occurs, you should also have chances finding Panaeolus cyanescens.

It occurs there, according to this link. It is a quite common dung lover many places in the world.
Note that a low number of finds is more likely to indicate lack of interest (or number of active mycologists) in a given area, than actually indicate a rare species. Even P. foenisecii was once said to be rare, but probably just went under the radar due to its apparent insignificance.

You guys were spot on! Brown bruising not blue, black spore print not purple.
It doesn't bother me that it's not active. I'm becoming interested in all types now as I learn more.
Thanks so much for the advice!

Looking at your new pictures, I see that this is Panaeolus papilionaceus due to the obvious partial veil remnants on the cap margin, which is a distinct feature of that species. Not surprising, since this is perhaps the most common species of Panaeolus in the world.
Is it the same specimen as the picture in your first post? They look quite different.

This counts for many if not most of the regulars on this forum. It's a consuming and gratifying hobby indeed!

Look at the Panaeolus/Copelandia and antillarum sections of my gallery, pay attention to the stems. Notice the little flecks on the cyanescens? The thickness and color should be noted as well, they are more petite than antillarum. Panaeolus/Copelandia cyanescens group will have a black spore print and growing directly from dung or compost enriched with dung and bruise bluish within 45min.

I found plenty of these yesterday although they only bruise brown. They are different to my first post but are most likely Panaeolus variety.

That is an inactive mushroom named Panaeolus antillarum

Thanks doc.
Similar in appearance to P.Cyanescens. I'm sure antillarum have been consumed in error when hunting for actives specimens. Atleast they are not poisonous.

Hi again,
Could I please get an ID on these? I'm pretty sure they are cubensis but I can't bruise the stems or get spore prints because they were a bit old and in bad condition when I found them.
They were found in a cow paddock on the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia.
Any help with this would be really appreciated!
