PNW psilocybe
    #26395563 - 12/22/19 12:34 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

These weren't obviously azures or cyans, are they allenii?
Wasn't sure  but they feel special

Habitat:
Where does it grow?
Northwest Oregon near coast. Woody debris covered hillside near sandy dune habitat. Unsure of what kind of wood it's growing from.

Gills:
Tan/brown gills, not (or barely?) attached

Stem:
1"-2" long, 4-8mm diameter, thick, tan/white/blue with white collarish thing towards the cap? Doesn't seem like a veil, more of a odd growth/bend point? idfk, maybs it's a veil?

Cap:
1"-1.5" diameter, caramel colored when found, darkened after spore printing while also showing hygrophanous highlights. conical.

Spore print color:
blackish, with maybe some purple tones

Bruising:
Bruised blue on the stems, on the edges of caps.

Other information: Smells like mushrooms!

First day I found them. Left em, marked with a pile of sticks. Came back 2 days later. We basically the same. Came back 2 days after that.

Harvested 4 days after finding.

Took a couple mushrooms and colonized sticks and put them in a their own patch nearby but less out in the open. Gonna go back and see if the myc is jumping yet soon!

Close up shots.

Butts are a jumpin! (the small bits are minced brown paper bag, if anyone is curious)

Very intersting! Nice find. I'm not sure what they are, my wild guess would be ovoids.
I don't think these are allenii. I'm curious to see what others will say.

Nice job with the butts!

I'm not sure what you have but they are Psilocybe.

Send photos of these to Allen. He might be very interested. Look kind of like my allenii but just a bit different...

Looks like some cross between an Ovoid and an Allenii. If I had to take a guess I would say they are just some beefy odd Allenii. Either way cool find!

Looks like psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. First time they’ve been found in a natural setting on the west coast as far as I know.

Really cool find! Post to mushroom observer.

Ps. allenii is where I'm leaning but a little more growing time would help maybe.

Definitely not P. allenii; these have a pronounced annulus.

I haven't ever seen or handled Psilocybe baeocystis,  could that be them by chance? Just throwing it out there.

Definitely not, nothing but P. ovoideocystidiata matches this morphology (at least none of the other  species documented in the PNW)

Edit: sorry, I just read this over and I feel like I sound like an asshole. All I mean is that P. baeocystis seems very unlikely to me.

It's all good,  appreciate you trying to be more courteous and I didn't think it would be a match, curious as to how it smells?

Baeocystis tend to be much darker and more fragile than these look IME.

If they are indeed Ps.ovoidiocystidiata I suggest you get a hell of a lot more woodchips for the flower pots,  they will rip through that in no time.  I put some in a a 50 gal pot in November and by June they had eaten everything, literally a 2" thick hollow mess. The entire center was gone and a 2" thick mycelial ceiling and walls is all that was left, never got the 1st fruit.

My thought too. Looking through all the finds posted on MO they appear to be a species with a very variable morphology.
I guess weather conditions - among other things - have quite some impact on their shape and size. But these should be
posted on MO to get further opinions.

Nice find!

The cap color is all wrong for ovoids imo. I think they might just weather beaten azurescens. The "annulus" might just be the stem growing weird from something falling on it, getting stepped on, etc. Knowing what they smelled like would help a lot. They could be ovoids though, the caps are weirdly shaped. Azurescens tend to be pretty evenly rounded.

Looking at it closer the stems look more like azzie stems to me! Also were the stems hollow?

Yeah, honestly the more I look at them the more they look like P. azurescens. I just could swear one of the pictures (the first one under the heading, “harvested 4 days after finding”) shows clearly  a membranous annulus, which is never a trait of P. azurescens.

The stems were hollow (sorry left that off the description). Close to the center of this photo, you can see the stem where it was removed from the cap. Tis meaty but hollow.

I could've been more specific on the smell, apologies! "Like mushrooms" was a little broad. They honestly reminded me of what azzies smell like, kind of earthy and like weirdly metalic? Smells are hard, I suck at describing what my nose deciphers in the absence of a hard likening like "smells like strawberries". Excuse the vagueness but yeah kinda smelled like mushrooms. Not that different from how I remember azures.

Also, I found some azurescens less than 20 yards from this location a couple of weeks prior to finding these.
But... they looked like this!

If you look at the first photo you can see that they were growing very low to the ground. I left em' for a few days before even trying to look at the stem because when I tried to lean the cap over to look it didn't budge. Just solid, short, low meaty dudes. Needed to let em' grow so I could even pick them without mangling the caps. And I didn't get a look at the stem until I harvested them so I couldn't tell you if any annulus was present early on.

I should've taken more photos, but yeah I wasn't convinced it was an annulus when I was processing them. After looking up close once I removed the cap I had chalked it up to odd grow/weird conditions. Similar to how I saw some odd growth on some cubes when I did pf cakes. Some just came out funky. But I'm no expert which is why I'm here. Thanks for everyone's input so far.
