Auditory hallucinations with CBD
    #26395231 - 12/22/19 09:24 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I find CBD in higher doses to be not exactly psychedelic, but something similar. It puts me in touch with my body, slows down all the crazy monkey-mind processes going on inside me so I can see them and stop reacting to them so unconsciously. It can also bring me some of the paranoia and acutely heightened introversion that normal cannabis can bring. The way I think of it is it removes some of the social skills (social guises or masks, even) that I use to navigate the world without being vulnerable or getting injured, and that puts me in a state where I can't explain my life or keep together the coherency of identity that people expect when they're having casual interactions.

Last night I took 75 mg of CBD as a sublingual oil. It felt salutary and calming. I didn't have the negative cannabis-like effects described above, just a body heaviness and feeling better attuned to my digestion, physical tension, things like that. As I was lying bed, though, I noticed I was having quite vivid auditory hallucinations. It was like I was tuning into a frequency in my head that was always playing, but usually I'm not aware of it.

I get headaches very often, and there's a constant head-tension that I could probably be aware of at any moment if I chose to tune into it. The auditory hallucinations I was hearing seemed to be at the frequency of the headache. I envisioned them as moving in waves sideways across the two lobes of my brain, from left ear to right, interfering with the normal signals of the brain. The hallucinations themselves were a loud, cacophonous but not-totally-unpleasant and not-totally-arrhythmic musical symphony, like a crazy, frenetic New Orleans big brass band with more instruments that I could count. It had an internal consistency.

Often with cannabis and psychedelics I've had experiences of hearing and conducting/guiding music compositions in my head. (I'm not a musician at all, just a frequent listener to all kinds of music.) Some of those experiences have been quite beautiful. But this experience was different in that I was actually hearing it. It was closer to a hallucination than just a thought-process I was involved with. In that sense it was kind of frightening, but certainly not overwhelming.

From an unscientific, spiritual perspective, the music I was hearing sounded like a "world frequency", like it was mirroring the chaos of the human world I'm immersed in all day, the endless bombardment of advertisements, electric signals, music, jingles, television noise, traffic, impulsive social media use and everything else I'm exposed to constantly. It was like the mad noise of the modern human mind was expressing itself at this frequency. I wondered if part of my mind is essentially carrying on like that at all times, and if that would subside if I were in a different, quiet environment free of stimulation. I also wondered whether it had anything to do with past concussions or other physical traumas to the brain, like the effects of abusing substances in unsafe ways in the past.

Anyway, it was a fascinating experience, subtle but clearly perceptible. It probably lasted for fifteen minutes or so as I drifted off to sleep. I wanted to share it hear and see if anyone else has had such experiences and what they make of it from a psychological, neurological and existential perspective.

I doubt cbd did that.  In fact audio "hallucinations" are not ncommon among people with no history of mental illness.  People with mental illness report that cbd helps lessen audio hallucinations.

If you listen to a lot of music, it can become like what happens playing video games for hours.  It's more illusion than hallucination.

Interesting, yeah, I don't think CBD caused it exactly. I experienced it as a kind of latent frequency or phenomenon that CBD was just bringing to the forefront. I certainly wouldn't have been aware of it without having taken CBD. And I hadn't been listening to music that day any more than I normally do.

I know what you mean about the illusion caused by listening to lots of (especially loud) music or playing video games, where your mental space starts to take the shape of the music or of the video game landscapes. This felt a little bit more tangible than that. But I'm not 100% sure I'd classify it as a hallucination. It was an interesting mental phenomenon, I'll leave it at that general statement since I'm no expert on this kind of thing.

Cbd could make meditation easier which meditation can create hallucination.  The idea is to not be attached to it, by not being attached or avoidant.  Which can be difficult in strong subconscious experiences.

I'm reviving this thread because I continue to have fascinating experiences and want to document them in case anyone else can relate.

Several of the past few nights I've been having very intense auditory hallucination phenomena and crazy energy surges in the spine, brain, and more broadly throughout the body.

There's a blend of things happening right now that I think are coming together to create these powerful mental experiences:

1. Taking high doses of CBD oil (150-400+ mg) in the evening.
2. Smoking cannabis in the evening.
3. Stress and uncertainty related to the coronavirus pandemic, subsequent reactivation of trauma patterns of energy in the body.
4. Stress related to excessive screen time, social media addiction (heightened by being in self-isolation), feeling the need to be available at all times to employers, family, friends etc.
5. Physical tension from being sedentary throughout the day, lack of stretching, poor sleep, poor posture during sleep, etc.
6. Re-addition of coffee (high caffeine) to my diet, which always exacerbates my physical/mental agitation.

It often happens like this: I lie down and my neck and upper back are very stiff (caused by osteoarthritis, recent whiplash, other traumas related to past concussions, drug abuse, other factors?). I feel tons of surging energy in my spine kind of exploding into my head. It's not terribly painful although the neck stiffness and sense of imbalance makes it hard to be comfortable. Deep concentrated breathing helps.

These sensations are accompanied by tangible auditory hallucinations in the form of very complex, heavy metal-type music. I've always been the type who has music playing in his head at all times, and during past psychedelic trips I've spent time visualizing and composing music with my mind. (I can't actually read/write music or play instruments unfortunately.) Anyway, the music is heard clearly and felt as energetic vibrations in my body, like cascading waves. I can alter it with thought and breath.

I also just seem to keep coming to a part of my brain that is screaming. It feels like tapping into the collective shadow, full of anxiety and death-fear, which is magnified now by this epidemic. It also feels kundalini-related. (I know both of those ideas aren't in line with the spirit of the Philosophy and Psychology forum, but I'm just documenting my subjective thoughts.)

I think the reasonable thing for me to do is cut down my dose of CBD, stop smoking cannabis, stop drinking coffee, and spend more time stretching, exercising, relaxing, doing breathing exercises, napping.

Anybody else experiencing weird psychological and energetic phenomena during this pandemic?

Sounds like you may be an intuitive empath, like you said tapping into the anxiety felt globally right now.  My wife is the same and myself to some degree.  It's weird you mention the neck stiffness and loss of balance, both of us have been getting those symptoms as of late as well.  We thought it was our lyme disease flaring up, but not really sure, I've never had those symptoms from it before.  Is yours worse than usual lately?

Not that I'm discounting the physical causes - caffeine and smoking cannabis I'm sure have a bit to do with it as well.  Cannabis is pretty intensely psychedelic/spiritual for me to the point that I won't smoke it during the day at all or around people.

It's something to consider for sure, the lyme disease.  My wife went 15+ years before finally getting a diagnosis.  She had terrible arthritis, thyroid that was so messed up specialists didn't know what to do, anxiety, depression and a whole host of other symptoms.
Unfortunately the standard tests for it are not very reliable...
One thing that has helped us more than anything else though was clearing up our diets.  Like, a lot.  Taking gluten out completely helped the most.  We basically don't eat anything processed or with unnatural ingredients.  Now we are usually able to make it through the flare-ups without going on months of antibiotics, which we always had to do before.

Anyway sorry don't wanna get too off topic.  Curious about the auditory hallucinations though, you seem to want them to stop - are they very unpleasant?

Auditory hallucinations seem generally related to schizophrenia and are, by their nature, deeply intrusive into daily living. Imagine being at home and hearing as though you were standing in a crowded bar. Audio hallucinations from psychedelics is possible, but this is not the primary feature of the experience.

my wife taught me to sleep the opposite way for relief of bed discomfort and when I put my head where my feet were, and my feet where my head was, if I leave my pillow (where I put feet) I sleep the rest of the night and wake up no neck pain.

after a few hours some tension builds again.

not every day, but this stifling time is weird.

always as a child used to hear music imagined to be from other rooms,

still do sometimes
