First timer on Gourmet
    #26394239 - 12/21/19 03:42 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys. Not sure who does or doesn't remember me. Not sure who is still around from back when I was a floater here for that matter. I've got some experience with cubes and pan cyans but it's been nearly 3 maybe 4 years since I've played in substrate.

I'm deciding to get back into the myco life and due to some circumstances with the law and now being in recovery I've decided that maybe gourmet and medicinal would be the route to go. I see that some are wood lovers and some I can cultivate in grain.

I know there is a search function but I wanted to see what everyone's take on this would be. What is the perfect 1st time grow species. Also with woodlovers like Shiitake and oysters would I start by inoculating something like Rye Berries or WBS and then fruit them in a wood based substrate?

Also is there a thread anyone is aware of similar to 13shrooms's compilation of TEKs and Q&A answers pinned in 'Mushroom Cultivation'?

Thanks in advance!

Any oyster chosen according to the weather where you are is what you want to start with. I use millet and whole oats 50/50 by weight for my grain spawn. Rye berries can also be used but are much more expensive. You will need some sort of tent to grow in and some way of producing humidity. Oysters will not do well in mono tubs they need much more FAE.

A grow tent works pretty well and you can use a simple humidifier, like for when your kid has a chest cold, and that will keep the humidity up pretty well. You still might have to mist some though.

Or you can do a greenhouse or build a little growroom as well.

Have fun!

Whats the potential of growing in a mono tub or even a shotgun tub. Are there gourmets I will be able to colonize in small mouth and large mouth quart jars and then fruit them into tubs? After doing more and more research it seems everyone is using myco bags up until the fruiting stages and then putting them in the open into the fruiting chamber. I'm trying to find another way if I end up going the grow block route. I don't want these jars to go to waste either tho.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for bulk grow bag vendors?

I get my bags off ebay. Medium size myco bags.

Most edibles go to wood, hardwood pellets or sawdust from a mill being most common.

As for monos, you can put the bags in them and when they start pinning take the lid off. It's not optimum, but can be done. Reishi can grow in a tub. I've not been able to achieve it, but others have.

I grow oysters in 5gal pails with wbs or oat spawn and straw or coir substrate. I've done open air fruiting but I just set up a tent and they're doing much better. I have jars of oats with shiitake and lion's mane that will go to bags of sawdust and wheat bran then in the tent. I haven't seen many species tubbed.
