FDA Warns of 'Serious' Respiratory Problems With Gabapentin 1

Life-threatening breathing difficulties can occur in patients who use gabapentin or pregabalin with opioids or other drugs that depress the central nervous system, as well as those with underlying respiratory impairment and the elderly, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned in a drug safety communication issued today.
"Reports of gabapentinoid abuse alone, and with opioids, have emerged and there are serious consequences of this co-use, including respiratory depression and increased risk of opioid overdose death," Douglas Throckmorton, MD, deputy director for Regulatory Programs at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

I've been prescribed Gabapentin and quit taking it due to its ineffectiveness towards any pain management. Frankly I was shocked when I discovered that there was a recreational market for it...
All these stories of abuse have made it harder for people who are fighting issues with pain.

...may occur in patients taking gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) or pregabalin (Lyrica, Lyrica CR) who have respiratory risk factors.

Not surprised and expected this to come after experiencing gabapentin, Thought it worked great for nerve pain but tolerance builds up faster with that then opioids, or least that is my belief. Seeing Europes issues with these things, knew it'd bleed over at some point.
Good post op!

This is, so far today, the dumbest statement I've read.

Pregabalin gets a lot of negative press for being abused and gabapentin for "zombifying" people but it's actually a very safe drug in comparison to other options. It's certainly not for everyone, and probably is overprescribed, but for some people it works wonders. Also, it's not necessarily the stupefying drug people claim it is.
α2δ Ligands Act as Positive Modulators of Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Prevent Depression-Like Behavior Induced by Chronic Restraint Stress
Effects of single and combined gabapentin use in elevated plus maze and forced swimming tests
Many many people are benefiting from the use of pregabalin and gabapentin and we should not be quick to stigmatize them.
All the article in the OP says is that gabapentinoids increase risk of respiratory failure. Anyone who works in healthcare already knew this. Only people who already have seriously compromised respiratory systems for other reasons are at risk of respiratory failure from gabapentinoids alone.

I am so sick of the FDA targeting gabapentin, especially as it may end up effecting me personally.
For one, gabapentin is hardly recreational(lyrica a bit more so I am told)....but it does help with opioid withdrawals, A LOT, and potentiates the opioid high a little. It also helps with a slew of co-occuring mental problems which lead people to seek out drugs of abuse in the first place...and is prescribed off label in this way about as much as it is prescribed for its FDA approved purposes.
Quote:
I've been prescribed Gabapentin and quit taking it due to its ineffectiveness towards any pain management.
I don't know what kind of pain you were taking it for, but its really only effective for nerve pain and even then you often have to manage your use of it for it to stay effective for any length of time.
Personally I take gabapentin(and fairly large amounts of it) for sciatica and neuropathy, and without it I won't say my life would be unbearable...but my quality of life would drop considerably as I would be completely unable to carry on the same lifestyle and would no longer be able to do any strenuous work or many physical activities...currently hiking, bowling, biking are pretty high up on my list of hobbies and I am a DIYer in the middle of rehabbing a house built in 1900 and there is no way in hell I would be able to accomplish this without gabapentin(excluding opiates of course).
It's honestly like the FDA just does not give one single fuck about people's pain...if a few of the wrong people take a certain drug the wrong way, they are perfectly content to have everyone else suffer because of it.

BINGO! And I might add "life" to that statement. I'm seeing all kinds of prior authorizations needed for people who have obviously been on these and other meds for 10-20 plus years, and they need these meds just to function daily.

The FDA is garbage, they ban sports supplements at the first sign of issues... but leave alcohol and tobacco legal
