Anybody use bags of coir? (Not bricks)
    #26393561 - 12/21/19 06:40 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey y'all. I recently found some giant bags of coco coir at a local hydroponics store. They're much cheaper than ordering bricksonline. I'm running into problems with the coir/water ratio when pasteurizing though. I use the bucket tek. I tried weighing out 450grams, mixed it with 4 quarts of boiling water; made soup. I read that 1 brick expands to approx 9 liters so I tried measuring 9 liters of bagged coir and mixing it with 4 quarts of boiling water; made soup.

Just wondering if anyone else uses bagged coir and if you've found a good ratio?

It's soul because if you're going to use 4qts of water you need a brick AND two qts verm, then you'd be fine. And I'm pretty sure you're supposed to weigh out 650grams of coir.

I used the loose stuff before but much prefer the bricks. It's like less than $2 for a compressed brick online. Pm me if you need a coir source.

1, i've heard people using them but some are enriched with trich for the plants which in theory shouldn't be a problem as they don't germinate on coir.

2, I wouldn't pasteurise them, if they are not good out of the bag with adding some water then It's more effort than the bricks and I don't like extra steps.

3, For adding water, you have to experiment how to get to field capacity but the bags will be at different moisture levels depending on how long it sat for in store, so you always have to adjust a little bit.
