Has anyone ever found peyote buttons in the CONUS?

Some of my family owns property outside of Santa fe NM. My dad has told me about how many years ago he found peyote buttons when he was wandering around on my grandmothers land.
Have any of you ever found them in the states?
Are there plants/trees/terrain they are associated with?
Is there a certain time of year they are easier to find?
It's too my understanding peyote is the most potent of the sacred cactus, is this correct?

Peyote exists year round, however, the buttons are well-camouflaged and pretty difficult to spot unless you know exactly what to look for and where to look.
Look underneath shrubs and you should be off to a good start.
Remember to cut the button off level with the ground so that you don't kill the peyote plant. That's the acceptable way to harvest the plant. Please do so if you find them because they are threatened by over harvesting.

Interesting...
There isn't much info online of people finding them outside of southern Texas. Which makes me think... The Santa Fe area is mostly plateau surrounded by mountains and covered in shrubs...
Maybe the locals want to keep it that way

Santa Fe is just so far north. They are sensitive to the cold. Its hard to imagine that they would be found there, unless there is a small area with warm microclimate conditions that would allow them to survive.
But I do recall hearing a talk by Keeper Trout where he discussed the range of peyote, and if I recall correctly he mentioned that there are some populations farther to the north than most people realize. I would listen to some of his talks on Youtube to try to learn more.

Santa Fe is way too far north and too cold. Even the southern half of the state gets too cold in the winter. This year is very mild so far but it will dip into the single digits or 0 occasionally down here. Up there would be no way without help. Lots of the state has textbook environment but then in the winter it gets too cold. Carlsbad has the rio and looks just like it does near the border but still gets too cold.

Most of the info ive found online says it cant handle below 30f
This guy says some of them survive -10
Maybe the range is slowly changing, kind of like with Stuntziis

He’s talking -10 centigrade. And that’s west Texas. Still further south than southern New Mexico.
Santa Fe is more north still. I can’t imagaine any populations, if there ever was any, to survive the cold and snow they regularly experience.

You're probably right.
Maybe its kind of like with P Cyan P stunzii. Ive heard people claim they arent as abundant in certain areas as they were decades ago.
The only difference is the buttons are being squeezed by climate change instead of habitat destruction.
