Crackatoa's easy oatsYou either love oats or fuckin hate them. They're cheap and right down the road from me, so I wanted it to work. I tried teks, some I didn't cause I wanted the easiest way. I didn't wanna have to do math and weigh things. Something I could do with doing everything else that has to be with this hobby. If you are about to give up on oats, give this a shot. What do you have to lose, cussing out a jar is sometimes the only way we get to relieve some stress. This is the way I prepare mine, I usually only use oats as a receiving grain. Bags and jars I'm knocking up with a master. I use WBS or Millet for those. I like smaller grain into larger grain, works good and quickly, allot better than oat to oat. IMO. During this I'm just gonna make some oats for 2 bags, 4 quarts each and for me that's 13 cups of oats. 2 bags or 8-9 quart jars (8 Full Quart jars, making about 9 myco quarts). LET'S GET STARTED Put a pot of water on the stove to boil, enough to cover the oats plus some adding in for expansion. I'm not good with math and cannot give you some crazy ass formula, You'll figure it out. I know its just a pot of water, but people love pictures Measure out your oats into a container. I prefer to be able to pour them into the pot of water all at once. Oats Once your water starts to boil, remove from heat source, dump in oats, skim off floaters, cover and let sit for 45 min. I know, people gotta have pictures though 45 Minutes later If you expected anything different, you thought this was gonna be elaborate, I'm about to switch this shit up thoughTIP !!!! Keep some soak water for Agar, LCs, Some weird energy drink your working on, or whatever.STRAINDump into a strainer. I know like to make a bowl in the oats SEE? It's a new kitchen item, That shit came outta nowhere didn't itAfter letting dry for awhile put into fridge for 12-18 hours and load into whatever you want and PC SEXY OATS That's how I do my oats, I hope it helps. Don't give up on oatsMush love Guys and GalsPS...It also works for WBS

👍👍
I started doing a 5 minute hot flash boil to my hybrid tek and I go from a 12hr room temp soak to a 10min raging boil then finish. Adds much more water with simmer. Never going back!! loL

Why do you throw off the floaters? How long do you pc? I prep two different ways. This is one of them.
I’m a fan of hot or boiled water baths over soaking ect. In addition, I think most people who have oat issues is because they are overcooking it. I also make sure to strain until the grain is visually dry.

I feel like the floaters are trash anyway, or there may be an issue with them. I PC for 2 hours with quarts, 3 for bags. I agree about the overcooking. I used to just strain for an hour or so but still felt like too wet. That's why I went to an overnight dry in the fridge, especially if going to bags or innoculating with LC

About how long do you leave it to dry?
I only tried doing rye once and it failed miserably, might try oats next time

Might be the strainer. Those metal ones like you have trap the water. Try a wire mesh strainer. I’m usually good for 30 minutes and it all looks dry. Some people spread them out over a flat mesh type strainer or screen material and run a fan so they don’t have to wait overnight to cook the grain. Personally I don’t wait for grain like that overnight. It’s time consuming. With giant batches I see people rig a fan and wire mesh or screen material with a frame to dry. I love the mesh strainers for that purpose.
These two trap the water and it takes much longer to drain. Although they may be good for pasta.

Strainers like this are your best bet. Especially with smaller grain such as wbs.

After I pour into strainer, I'll do that chef toss thing for awhile, till it's not dripping and then I put in the fridge for 12-18. I'm sure a 4-6 would be fine. I do mine for 12-18 cause of my schedule. I'll do everything at night, and load and PC the next day after work. Oats are awesome, once you figure it out. Just like any grain really, but oats are cheap and easy to find locally for me. I go one hour away to pick up Millet.

I have noticed that with my strainers, I have to turn them on there side pretty much to drain properly. I do plan on getting the wire mesh strainer soon though. Once I get a house I'll make the large flat window screen strainer. My place is small, my neighbors are close, like I could pee on their house from my front porch close and Bible thumping nosey.

I imagine it would be the same as blanching or putting ice water on boiled eggs to slow the internal cooking. I like that idea.

I wanna get it off the heating element, the heating element stays hot for awhile. I don't want the water any hotter than it is.

I felt like an overnight outside the fridge would dry too much. Cause of my schedule, I make grain on night 1 put in fridge till I get off work 20 hours later. I feel like it keeps the cooked grain fresher, I'm sure that's my own head plus I don't wanna keep grain just laying out for that long and plus with cool grain loaded into jars and PCed it creates it's own condensation giving them a little more moisture.

I know this is old, but I can’t find a current oat tek thread. Sorry
This is what my oats look like as the water was just starting to boil. So many open grains, is this like cracked oats or something?

Here is the bag label:

Also tried the super lazy no soak no boil - straight it jars and pc. Got lots of mush:

It may be cracked grains, def looks wrong. When did you add oats? What was your process? In my tek, oats aren't added till the boil begins to boil and taken off heat. It's more of a really hot 30 min soak than cooking. Always here to answer questions, bump any of my teks anytime

I guess I was fallowing another tek that keeps a rolling boil for 30 min. BoD’s. This pic was taken right after the water was boiling and grains dumped in. I think they must be pre cracked or something…

You can use a blender like the bullet grind it up and use in place of brf. Spongi has a tek for verm + grain flour bags.

I am going to open up the lions mane and bag fruit it, the az put to some chips for an outdoor bed, and the burma, let colonize some more and then put to a bulk shoebox.

Hope I’m not bugging you by continuing to post on your thread
The az jar looked and smelled good to my untrained senses. The cake was formed and hard to break up and get out of the jar. Broke it up and mixed with boiled and cooled alder chips. There was a little myc left in the jar, so threw in some chips and closed it back up to see if it will colonize….

Feel free to post, I'm hoping they all work out well. I might have to try woodlovers this fall.

I am under the impression that az especially take time for the myc to develop on chips that it’s good to start the winter before - now - for fall fruits outdoors. But I am new to it, so
The mycelium is really aggressive on agar, grows faster than just about everything else except maybe lions mane

Your definitely right about the open air dry on a screen till after work tomorrow being the wrong way lol. If it's dry asf where you live anyway. I was just about to give up on oats but the fridge part makes sense! Could never get the timing right without staying up all night and you still don't have time to PC before work lol.
I shall have to try the fridge trick.
Also ordered a bag of white millet online for wayyyy to much I'm seeing. $50 for 25 lbs... Going to try your no prep Tek with it!
But it takes what it takes I guess lol. Hoping it works better than 50 lbs of oats I've thrown away after bagging and pcing..
Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Hey Crackatoa,
I've tried a couple different teks for grains. I've moved into oats and I'm still struggling with getting them down. With Bod's tek after I've PC'ed them they seem a little toasted/burnt. I've tried the No Soak No Simmer method but that leaves the jars very wet and sloppy.
I've just come across your method. I'm gunna give it a go this weekend. I'll be using 1 quart jars with modified lids.
Do you have any extra tips for a struggling newb?
How long do you run your PC cycle with this method? 90 min?
Thanks in advance for your help!

This is what I do and as long as I shake while hot and start with pretty close to the right amount of water, the grains seem to come out fine. They always look dry on the top 5th but after a couple shakes look really good and grow spawn. I just started back after a couple of years off and am not more than a beginning amateur and so take it for what it is worth. It does require you only ending up with a jar about 4/5th full so you have room to shake. I wish I could remember the weights of grain to water that I found somewhere on the big wide web but I marked a measuring cup after doing it the first time and don't remember them. in grams it was 2oo something something grams grain to 1oo something something water. When I did bags, it was 2lbs grain to 1.5lbs water. Hope this helps more than hurts. Cheers gww

There a definitely broken grains in there.
looks like crimped oats. i've been doing a ton of reading as i head towards starting, focusing in on oats for the price and availability so been researching oats like crazy and those definitely look like crimped oats. they are whole oats, they then steam them and roll them in a crimping machine which squashes them a bit.
edit: should have finished reading before posting, looks like you already figured it out.

The last bag of oats i got was full of corn and other detritus. Any methods for filtering out the random shit? Some old farmers trick? Getting really tired of picking things out one by one.

What’s up everybody?! First of all I know this thread hasn’t been touched in a few months so I apologize for the late entry, but as I was scrolling through the comments I really couldn’t believe how much variance I’ve been seeing/hearing about when it comes to using oats… I originally started with WBS( least favorite) and kind of bounced around experimenting with different grains and techniques for a while until a reliable buddy put me on to oats! He told me not only does he not soak them, but he also mentioned that he barely even needs to rinse them… then after he told me how cheap they were I just had to give these a shot because I literally couldn’t believe how cheap and easy he made it seem….. soo measure out your oats however you normally would and I personally give them a couple rinses just to make sure they’re fairly clean…. Then fill your pot with water using about 3xs the volume of the oats soo if the first line is where your oats are up to then the second line is how much water you should use (for expansion). Next you crank your heat up to high, and once you start getting a boil going, set a timer for 40 minutes.. decrease your heat just a little bit, we want to keep a rolling boil but not as hot as possible.. stirring here and there, once you get to about 35 minutes start inspecting your grains and take out when they start bursting…:: I let mine dry in calendars for about. 1/2 hour or so before transferring to a big towel and depending on quantity I might let the fan blow on them, once dried i load up, PC AT 15 for 90minutes and viola!!! Give em all some shakes after you finish pressure cooking for the next couple hours or so…
Crack I’m giving your technique a shot right now man I’d love to see the difference the two different techniques have on the amount of absorbtion and overall performance after PC ing , thanks for the post bud!!
-------------------- Hope I can help & Thanks for the help!
