Cap:
Diameter 2-4 inch diameter, light to dark brown, soft texture, spherical shape, concave caps

I was thinking that too, at least the ones growing on the tree. There were a few on the ground that have a wavier cap, but I wanted to try to do spore tests to see if there was a difference. Some have very dark purple spores and some leave light brown prints. Would looking at the spores under a microscope give a better ability to identify in the future?

Yeah, Hypholoma also have purple-brown prints. But no need to look at microscopic features - cyans will not have the yellow/orange caps. Cyans will also have white stems and there will be obvious bluing. The stems are also much stronger than Hypholoma.

Thank you. I have been hiking around in the mountains working on identification and picking up trash as I go. I had no idea about the blue staining and feel bad about taking all these mushrooms home. I will get there eventually 😎

Most cyanescens will be found in woodchips  created by humans - think landscaping at apartments, parks, shopping malls, etc. Very rare to find in forest.... They like humans
