Rye is my favorite. A little more expensive but worth it imo. Around here it's sold for planting in the fall to protect the ground in the winter. About 40c a pound and very easy to work with. Top notch stuff with no chaff or other debris.
Oats are around 18c a pound but much more prone to bursting when simmering. Also all the oats I've bought around here have a lot of contaminant grains (mostly just the occasional corn kernel), which usually isn't a problem but there's this one contaminating grain that mycelium absolutely refuses to colonize. It looks like a kidney bean or something but hard and mycelium will never grow on it. And no it's not just a small rock lol.
For the people buying wheat and sorghum, what is it sold for? Animal feed? I've never seen it at feed shops. Only ever seen oats, millet, and corn. Been interested in trying them.

Honesty it's all the same. people praise wbs, wheat, rye etc... It all produces the same outcome if done right. It all breaks down to what is comfortable for you. In the end were all achieving the same goal for this thread I'm assuming...just open your third eye and expand your conscious mind.

OATS.... Honestly I've come to find this is almost as "toxic" as any other forum free to any Joe Shmoe. People hate oats because it is the cheap, working, available alternative. Yes it is easy to over hydrate, but with any clean proper practice it is one of the cheapest and reliable grains. I respect the TCs here, but please don't bash a grain that is cheap, easy and available to most. It is very reliable and cheap! It almost feels like oat haters are like republicans or democrats hating one or the other because of the advantage one will gain.

Hobbit GDF said: Awesome sauce. Thanks everyone. I think I overhydrate my oats. WBS always came out good. I want to try wheat & Millet the most so far. This was a good thread. I appreciate everyone's time and opinion. I'm going to try and pick some up this weekend and I'll keep yall informed.
The only way to over hydrate oats is by boiling them like in Bods Tek. If You just soak oats in warm taps watsr for 12 hours they will take on 60-65g of water per 100g of oats And wont have too much water unless you add water in the jar. Bods Tek gives perfect grains at 75g of water per 100g of oats. 👍

I don't think there is necessarily a right or wrong grain, alot of it comes down to prep. Oats are nice but if you over cook them they turn into a starchy mess, trust me iv done it. Wheat is a good grain rye is good, im sure there are threads here of everything working for someone. I mainly like oats cuz they are cheap as hell and easy to prep, but im going to try some millet out in the near future cuz iv never tried it before but I bet it would rip through coir with all the inoculation points. Maybe popcorn is not the best, but i think thats been said before.

wheat berries. no soak, no rinse, no simmer. full on boil until just about ready. strain it, give it a couple of tosses in the strainer and then load into jars and sterilize immediately. comes out perfect every time!

Rye was my jam but it is expensive.. I was looking on amazon and the amazon choice brand is about half the price of any of the other ones there. Rye is just really simple to do, but I hear that about oats too.. also hear oat horror stories though.. weavils sound shitty too. But to each their own! Don’t knock it til ya tried it I suppose

Out of all grain wbs is my personal favorite of all time. I’ll explain why. The leap off from inoculation has tons of inoculation points. This colonized my bulk subs days faster compared to other larger grains like oats, rye ect. In that respect, wbs is king on speed. After a shake the jar colonized quicker side by side than oats. My only reason for switching to oats was cost and getting wbs stuck between my toes. I always felt there was a plethora of grain on the floor hidden at all times even after a sweep.
So now I don’t have wbs between my toes and my grain and bulk subs colonize a little slower. It’s all piece of mind. If you like a certain grain and have success stick with it. I’m the type to try everything so I like to mix it up and use all kinds of different grain. But I always go back to the cheapest locally, easiest and least fuckable grain which I feel is oats.
