Grain of choice 1

So I'm wondering what everyone uses as their grain. Especially the TC's. So I started with long brown rice along time ago. Then I ordered a kit with 1/2pt brf/verm (I advise against a kit). I tried wbs and had great success for few months. Wife hated smell. Switched to oats because they were cheaper. Love them. Easy prep. Instead of soaking for 24hrs like wbs I let oats dry for 24hrs so it's same amount of time. I want to try something different. Millet, rye, idk. Maybe back to WBS. What do u guys use and like the best. Why do you choose that grain? Hope this helps anyone new wanting to try something new and more advanced so to say. Thanks everyone who replies.

I like rye (Soak and a simmer), But I have used oats (Bod's prep) with success.
Going to try millet next. I have read good things about it.

I use mostly WBS. It’s cheap, easy to find, and clean so long as you stay away from name brands (store generics are always way better quality). I also like to pretend that the multiple different seeds gives my mycelium some variety to chew on, but the reality is it probably doesn’t care.

Whole Oats are the best bang for your buck imo. $10-$15 gets you a 50lb bag at most feed stores, we go to D&B. We can fill 60+ quart jars with less than half the bag. Bods easy AF Oat tek has been working beautifully and saving me a grip in cash.

I get a 50lb bag of oats here for a little over 8$, so they're my grain of choice until something cheaper come along.

Lol, I have noticed the hate of oats around the forums from a grip of members, just curious why? I am prone to making a huge mess with wbs so to save my wife and I the clean up I switched to a bigger grain, less noc points, but less mess and less $ spent.

I think it is easy to over hydrate even when they initially look fine. Then peeps have issues. I prep mine far shorter than often advised then dry the shit out of them after. Any more and it is usually pretty sweaty in there. You want them to roll freely around in the jar and look like the oats you started with from the bag IMO.

I used to do wbs a lot until I tried wheat berries. Hands down the easiest most consistent grain I've tried. I've only really done corn, wbs, Millet and wheat berry. I've been doing gallon jars 3/4 full with no issues. Wbs seems like it goes anaerobic easier in big jars. Started these with a couple gallons of x7x on wheat.
I just do 20 min simmer, strain it for ten min and load jars for PC. If I need them drier like for lc I let them sit out longer.

I never had any luck with WBS. Oats are cheap and rye berries are expensive. Easy decision.

I have recently started using pot barley with some pretty crazy results. Due to the lack of a husk, the barley does stick together, but it does not create any extra liquids/contams. some of these jars have been sitting for 3 wks with PE in them with no visible contam issues so far. i soak for 10 hours, drain in a strainer until nothing is draining anymore and put them directly into the jars and pc for 90 mins/15 psi. here is some 72 hr PESA shoeboxes
