Coco coir Monotub taking too long to colonize?
    #26390634 - 12/19/19 12:17 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hello

I've used BRF and verm to make my jars. They colonized just fine with no signs of contam.

I then broke up all the mycelium on to a monotub with Coco coir which I let soak overnight with boiling hot water. It has been about 15 days and there has been some growth but not as much as I would like.

The temperature in the room has been on the colder side (60-65f) due to winter and light exposure has been decent ( it is in an isolated room with a lot of windows). Ive been fanning the mono at least 3x a day. Keeping it moist (85-99%).

Is it normal that it is taking so long? I've moved the tub closer to the heater at night when the heater goes off. During the day I've recently had a sun lamp point straight at the tub to keep it warm (70-75f) since the heater doesn't go off during the day since no one is home.

I do not have any holes in the mono. The lid that I use keeps moisture in and is not sealed tight since I flip it upside down keeping some cracks open.

60-65F would slow the growth considerably. I had bags that were taking FOREVER to colonize in that temp. Exploded when I moved them to a room that was 70 plus. I think the added heat will help.

Did you squeeze test  the substrate for field capacity?

I'm here to learn. I'm also willing to help. If I'm wrong on something, please call me out. I am not resistant to new information, but I always carry a healthy dose of skepticism.

Cold temps slow things down, 65 will about double time to fruiting and 60 will pretty much halt growth. These are tropical species, ~75 is perfect but 65-80 will work.

Yes I did squeeze for field capacity. I've also been spraying it almost everyday. Is too much water a problem? What about light? From what I've researched here 12hrs light 12hrs dark is ideal.

It looks like it's doing fine to me. Does it smell like fresh myc? As long as you don't see green and it doesn't smell like anything but mycelium you're usually golden. I've had tubs take so long to colonize in winter I forgot about em and they flushed out just fine.

It smells like fresh myc yes. I did see a bit of green this morning which I promptly removed.

Just keep an eye out for more trich, once you see it that shit has already dropped spores and can be a bitch.

What could of caused the contam? Did it get contam when I had it in the jars or while in the monotub? I was under the impression it would be difficult for any contams to grow once the mycelium is set.

I don’t see trich but it does look bacterial. I recommend u stop misting if u are, that tub is drenched.

Looks sketch to me but maybe it will still fruit..

What tek guide did you use/or are you using a general ratio of just Coir?

Cycle your misting. Let it dry. Then most, from a distance. You can always add more water if needed. Rather have it too dry than too wet.
"Water is the pathway/breeding ground for bacteria"
Increase fae to dry it out. You've already got pins so I wouldnt worry bout triggering.

That flush will probably finish. Don't count on a second.

In the meantime I would stop misting or adding water and let the flush finish with the water that's there, and while the fruits mature you can try to control the trich. It's usually a losing battle. Search for things like trich surgery.

Most of the time it hitches along for the ride somewhere between spores and spawning. You don't have to see it early on for it to be there hiding. It happens.
