Couple of beginner questions
    #26390119 - 12/19/19 06:05 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I've been using grow bags which seems to work well. Id like to switch to mono soon but would like to clear up a few things first. After harvesting a good flush I notice a blueish green on the surface of my substrate. Is this potentially mold and if so how would I tell? I've also considered its possibly psilocybin from the shrooms being pulled out. Also do you dunk the substrate between flushes like BRF cakes and if so how concerned do I need to be about contamination during this process. Finally how sterile do you work when harvesting?
I'm looking forward to moving to the next step in growing but I would like to master the simple methods first.

The blue green you are talking about is likely just bruising from handling during harvest.
pics could help

depending on what your initial water content was yes you may want to dunk/bottom water/heavy mist

I suggest being clean, but as far as sterile, you can scratch your ass as you harvest. The organism is most vulnerable prior to 100% colonization of the spawn.

Theres a good chance it's just bruising if you just harvested your first flush substrates can bruise pretty badly.

Yea you wanna dunk for 3 hours after the first flush. I just fill the tub up with water and drain it out when it's done. No special precautions to take for contamination.

Once fully colonized substrate isn't very prone to contamination. I just wear gloves twist and pull.

So the bluish green sounds to me as fruits bruising. There was probably a much room in the patch that left it’s butt stuck on the substrate and bruised. You can try removing it all the way. But mycelium is known to bruise. Keep the humidity relatively high without too much condensation.
As far as sterility. You will find that is the most important part and consider it in every step. You cannot overdue sterility. You will see your grows fruit better colonize better and you will notice little to no contamination.

Awesome guys thanks! IM so looking forward to my first mono type grow. Although I've had zero problems with bags. I suspect me yield will be greater. I'm looking at the shoe box tech. Its such an wonderful hobby I'm surprised more people don't do it.
