my grow setup with cakes...suggestions?
    #2638970 - 05/04/04 11:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

these are GT strain on BRF and verm cakes. This is a first grow.
No dunking was done since cakes colonized in 3 weeks.

Does anyone have any comments, suggestions or advice on how to better ensure a healthy grow?

He's having trouble keeping the humidity low. A cool mist is being used. it's set to go on for and hour on low, and then off for 2 hours, but the humidity always seems to peak at 99% He's drilled a hole on the bottom side of the container, and even tried letting the lid simply sit on the basin rather than snapping it tight yet it's still 99% He's not home all day so fanning is out of the question...

Thanks

1.) Def. dunk your cakes before birthing, you will notice an increase for sure.

2.) I see you have a digital hydrometer...dont even bother with it. I had one and it would always read that my rh was abouve 99%, but the crop grew fine. Just try to fan a few times a day, and mist the lid and walls when they look dry.

Goodluck!

are you sure your humidity is at 99%? You should have water dripping down the sides! If so, looks good to me.

Why are you trying to lower the humidity?Cakes are suppose to be as close to 100% as possable.

I was hoping to aim for 90% - I thought that was ideal for cubensis

99% is awesome,if your guage is accurate, you got primo shroom weather in there. One more percent and thunder clouds will roll in and you will need a storm shelter for those little guys!

90% is for casings,100%(or as close as possable) is for cakes

BTW i would stuff some pollyfill in that hole or cover with TYVEK.

ok - is it not too late to dunk?....If I decide to, what should I use for a container and what would be some good sterilization practices for this?...does the verm, I roll it in have to be steralized too?

sterilize the verm that you roll in, at least for like 5 minutes in the microwave... you can dunk in anything that is bleach cleaned and can submerge the cake... use your imagination... you may want to wait till after this flush to dunk, but you could always dunk/cold shock and see what good it does...

Definately sterilize your verm. As for the dunking of your cakes ,that would depend on how long since you put them in. If you dont have any pins or hyphal knots appearing yet I dont see why you couldnt. Putting them in a brand new ziplock baggie with distilled or bottled water with a dash of h2o2 is a good way of a nice clean dunk. Leave em in there for at least 12 hrs if not 24. Keepin them in the fridge during the dunk helps initiate pinning according to many, but that is up to you.
