Other friends, boarding places, family, what normal people do. Some people use people if they are willing to be used. I don't like relationships like that personally but to each their own. Or just ask her why and see what she comes up with for excuses. Lol. Maybe making you a dog.

It's a Shiba Inu. A breed that requires a lot of attention and training, which she does not. I like the dog and am more than able to care for it, though a bit of a hassle being winter and having to walk it nearly 1/4 mile, two to three times a day, I'm not thrilled to be watching it for 5 weeks.
She makes a point that I have been the only one to watch her dog and that she thinks it would be more comfortable. I know she has other friends but I doubt they'd be willing for 5 weeks.

So in last 12 months she has not been able to care for her dog 6 + 5 + almost 2 more weeks = 3 months or 25% of the time...
Maybe not fair for her to keep the dog, to the dog that is. Maybe someone 100% committed in time and presence would be a better home for this breed especially?
Doesn't sound like that is you although you do have the ability and compassion obviously. But on the other hand you've had it encumbering your time 25%
Idk just my .02 I would ask her if she's being fair to the dog and you?

Ahh, math!
I think she is well aware that she made a mistake in getting that particular breed, or any dog for that matter as she travels a lot and works to pay for it so her elderly parents mostly care for the dog.
I told her I needed to sleep on it.

Tell her you can't because you have a cat. Then go get a cat.
They are hella easier to care for and she won't ask you next time either.

Don't do it for any amount of cash. It's not about money; it's about self respect and boundaries. If you wanted a Shiba Inu you'd have a Shiba Inu.
Easy to say from my position, I know, but I hate to see other people get abused.

Ha beat me to it! Yea keep it. Or sell it.
Or maybe just send it back to her piece by piece. I’d be sure to keep it alive as long as possible. Maybe tell her you love her as you cut out it’s tongue. Then try working things out. Things will get better.

Seriously, if it's a lousy dog to take care of either train it and keep it for yourself when you got the hart forbit or don't even bother. The dogs just gonna get worse if she doesn't train it and you re gonna be stuck with it when she s tired of it

Well, I have slept on it and woke up today feeling the same, that I don't want to watch her dog.
Even for $500 I don't feel it's worth the amount of stress that comes along with it.
Having my morning coffee realizing how much time and effort will have to be sacrificed for 5 weeks and how much stress will come along with it. Remember, it's winter in Colorado and chilly.
It's sad because I do love her but I have to listen to my gut and not my brain, because that fucker is damaged, fo sho. And even though I think the $$ will help, I have sanity to maintain.
Besides, I'm not really struggling much anymore after receiving a raise so the money is much less tempting.

You're being emotionally manipulated by a person who doesn't actually appreciate you as a person or they wouldn't be doing it. Intention and awareness is irrelevant (they're too dumb to realize they're doing it; my fucking favorite rationalization for shit behavior) and never an excuse. I wouldn't do it.
