Casing layer is thick and clumpy
    #26389317 - 12/18/19 06:26 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone! Been around for a long time years ago on the mushroom hunting forum, first time on this side though! I started this account because I just cant remember by login credentials 😂. Its been quite a few years. Hoping to find some old friends from back in the day though!

Anyways, this is my first time using a casing layer and I'm worried I may have messed up. My casing is very clumpy and chunky rather than thin and powdery. I used 50/50+ crushed oyster shells and a bit of lime. Do I need to somehow crumble it up and make the material finer? Vermiculite was grade 3 coarse if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance!

How clumpy? I use 50/50+, and mine is never powdery. It comes out of my jars in good size clumps, but breaks up moist and fluffy.

I had the same problem, def the peat. I used jiffy 5050 but you gotta pick out some sticks and either sift out or manually break up little chunks of moss.
