I was mostly kidding but strands of organic material tangling by chance and their importance for life/the universe/existence has been kind of a theme of the last 2 trips I've taken so here's my opportunity to sound pretty out there.
I do think that there's something to it catching bits of caramelized LME as it swirls around (like smartattack said, a scaffold, kind of like phosphate and deoxyribose in DNA ), that in turn catch bits of mycelia that are floating around. as it swirls and finally settles on the bottom of the jar, those bits grow out some as they sit undisturbed, and make use of the sugars attached to the hair as a food source. when I hit the agitation bar again they all get exploded and the process begins again. this caramelized sugar stranding/clumping happens naturally, but to a lesser degree in my other jar, though many of the caramelized bits end up getting stuck to the side of the jar above the water line, so maybe the dog hair does play a role in keeping them floating in the solution. I'm definitely not concerned about its safety since I know it was in the jar before the PC, and even though I'm typing right now that I'm not going to put dog hairs in an LC on purpose, as I type it I think "well, maybe that'd make a good thread though..."

OP updated, Finally got around to taking some pics and making some transfers yesterday;
Almost all 11 plates show myc, but these 4 look the healthiest/fastest to me.

took 2 transfers from each plate. Grabbed 1 more Avery plate and took a transfer off it as well.

Randalf the Grey said: That's odd. I thought maybe just dirty fuel but we're using the same. The only other things I can think of would be the type of blade or procedure. I have used Xacto blades and stainless scalpel blades. Xacto got a bit of soot but only after a few burns or if I just burned the shit out of them. So far no soot from scalpel blades, but only just started using them. I swish my blades in iso before each burn. Maybe this is preventing bits of agar from burning to blade and making soot. Not saying you should do that, just trying to find the variable that is causing your issue.
I am using xacto and also do the iso swish before flaming. Maybe I'm flaming too long. And maybe I'll upgrade to a scalpel soon. Thanks.

I use a regular bernzomatic torch with base myself. Very quick work on blades. Last night, being tired, I briefly tried to flame sterilize my finger tips after touching something I shouldn't have. Luckily it only resulted in needing a new glove.

lol that’s how you know you’ve been doing too much agar, when you auto sterilize your fingers after touching something.
I have that same bag of premix lme, 9-12g to 500ml was good for me, maybe a little soft.
About the soot, I think it’s about the metal. My scalpel I can torch forever and get no soot and I don’t dip in iso. But when I used my loops for the first time for this thread they did leave some black marks. Unless it’s just a lot of spores. That’d be nice

If you wipe the blade off before flaming you wont have soot. Its just carbonized/burnt agar. Doesnt rwlly change anything and its sterile so I usually dont bother

I wipe my blade with iso every time, and I still get soot after reheating it 7 or 8 times. It's definitely from the metal, I can see it flaking occasionally; and I'm using a scalpel, not an exacto.
Maybe I'm heating it too long Maybe it's my butane torch
I figured it really doesn't matter, it's all sterile anyways. Just gotta remember to disregard the little black flecks I see occasionally.

So I tested my second spore syringe on agar yesterday (first one arrived contaminated from the vendor) and it’s also contaminated. The first photo is about 18 hrs after putting a drop of spore solution from the syringe on the plate and the second is 24 hrs post. Can someone tell me if this is yeast or bacteria?

Most contaminating shit isn't going to have the kind of edges that carbon deposits have anyway. So, aside from aesthetics, it's really no issue. I guess, worse case scenario, something could be hiding under one of those flakes.
Alternately, you could use a cooling plate:

I like to see how long I can get away with using one until it contaminates, lets me know my technique is on point.

That looks like bacteria to me. I don’t think yeast gets wet like that usually.

If I learn nothing else from the growing along, I have learned that I should be grateful for the MSS that I have gotten. I know some vendors will work with you and replace badly contaminated syringes as long as you don't mention cultivation in any way. I know that doesn't help you now though. I feel like you best\fastest bet would be starting a buttload of plates and hoping you can clean one of them up enough to use.

Unfortunately all the spores get swallowed up in the Goo. I thought about a mass dilution and pouring it into the horse manure pile outside.

When I first started agar work I tried using a little campstove (propane fuel) to sterilize. Thought it was clever since it has a nice flat base and can just sit on the counter with no fear of tipping. But I got lots of soot. Lately I've been using the burner on my gas range, since I tend to set my SAB up right there on the counter. Any reason this is a bad idea? I've never heard anybody mention using a range before... Little to no soot.

All good. Assuming it's a gas range - it's either propane or natural gas... same as bunsen burners or torches.

I would try putting only 2 drops on a fresh plate, each drop on opposite halves of the plate, then immediately put the plate in the fridge in a bag. Growth will be slower, but the myc growth should be faster than the bacterial growth at those temps. I did this with some 3 yr old MSS I am trying to save and it worked quite well. This may give you the time you need to grab a transfer before the slime takes over.
