agree with all, appreciate CBK for getting this going - definitely a fun chance to grow with a group. I have a couple other fun things planned for these plates but figure if there is a (extremely low stakes, light hearted) race going on why not try since I won't be sad if these get fucked up somehow, but I could totally salvage the streaks without much hassle if something does go wrong.
edit: hell yeah grim, cheers

I started my APE a PFC plates at 00:15-ish on 01\01. Then last minute I decided to start a few more. Like one of those "sale ends:", the fact that I was running out of time made me do it. Started PR and PC at 23:30-ish on 01\01. Those are also already showing growth. A pleasant surprise.
Sorry grimsweeper, my memory sucks

I have literally one drop in this. Which dropped ~7PM 1/1. So I guess I can still have germination within two days. But I don't really recall ever getting that growth rate with a syringe.

2 days in?
Actually less than that. Spores were put to agar right before 1 am yesterday. By the way is there a name for this kind of growth? It hasnt thickened up and become white yet. It's the stuff that grows at the very edges of tomentose growth that almost is clear.

How do you calculate nutrient % for soak water?
Say you want a 2% nutrient solution
First you measure out 98 grams of water then add in 2 grams of your grain soak water. Makes 100 grams, 2 grams out of 100 is 2%
Although technically you could probably argue that the agar weight should be factored but for ease of calculating that's how I do it
Grain soak water isnt 100% nutrient though. You’d have to figure out the water content by drying a measured amount down to a powder and do the math based on that.
If you added 2 grams of a grain flour to 98g h20 then it would be 2% but 2 g of soak water is probably more like 0.02%
I use grain water about 50:50
Ha, so the consensus is to use somewhere between 2% and 50% grain water? Seems like a good time for a TC to enlighten us amateurs...

You can use it straight up but I like to dilute it for clarity and on weaker agar myc tends to run a little faster.
Dont think anyone has gone through the effort to do the experiment to see which performs best. But since everyone probably uses a slightly different amount if water to grain when prepping IDK how accurate it would really be anyways. I just noticed if you water it down about 1/2-2/3 the myc starts to run faster which means its seaching for nutes and this helps for cleanup transfers but if thats your only goal you can make agar with straight h2o and use that for a transfer. Theres enough micronutrients in the agar itself the myc doesnt die but it does spread fast looking for more food.
There is no “right way” or consensus. Depends on your prep, the grain, and your intended use for the water. You can water it down even more for LC and it will still work decently. 100% gwlc works too but it takes a while to colonize.
Sometimes you just gotta figure out the ballpark and experiment from there to figure out how it will work best for you

fuck it. went home at lunch and made two plates from that spore clump. cut a diamond around it, then cut that diamond in half to make two plates. I came at it from the side so that the scalpel wouldn't be over anything I want to mess around with later. i figure one of these should work.

I added your contest to the OP
If anyone else wants to run a contest just post in this thread and I'll link it in the OP.
I may think up a few myself. I was thinking about doing some kind of participation giveaway as well upon completion of a grow log.

Excuse me while I prep my "multispore-as-fuck" tek. (Now I wish I had streaked more plates, in the hope that at least one would be clean enough to drop without transfers.)

Yeah I think I'll drop in 2 grain jars straight from the germ plate for the sake of completion if they look decent but I know theres a lot of noobs on here so please only do so if you have the time/plates/patience to also do transfers. I'd love to see far more successful grows than failures.

I intend to take prints off this stropharia. If I have enough I’ll just send a free print to everyone who participated. Anyway I’m starting to see some growth on my plates today!

Yeah, I'm quite tempted to do this myself but don't have time to drop more before vacation tomorrow. Also now kicking myself for growing PE rather than my trusty GT spores that grow so much faster.
(Tip for noobs: if you're trying this, the trick to maximize likelihood of a clean plate is to use as little spore solution / spores as possible. The less you put on the plate, the greater the chance you manage to avoid putting bacteria / mold spores on there at the same time. There's no guarantee of course, but IME the cleanest plates from spores are the ones that I'm the most stingy with.)

Maybe there could be a minimum 1 transfer rule?
Not my contest but it kind of defeats the whole idea of spores being cleaned on agar if people are just racing to get a single fruit to mature.

Word.
Otherwise I’m inclined to tiger drop my agar into a pint of WBS right at germination🤷🏻♂️

OK, so I've given in to the urge to race. Just streaked some B+ spores from a print I made last May into four 60mm plates of soft agar. (Though with soft agar, "streaked" is a strong word, given that the inoculation loop basically sinks right in with the slightest touch.)

Depending what the results look like, I'll either do a single transfer or just drop a full plate and see what happens. (Unless CBK's one transfer rule applies, in which case I'll transfer to another soft agar plate and drop then.)

If my vote counts for anything, I vote against one transfer. That rule would likely disqualify me, I predict multiple transfers. And I'm already having so much fun!

Meanwhile, after 2 days, both the PE and Pan Cyan plates are showing good, clean germination (pic quality isn't the best due to condensation, but you get the idea).
