My jars just won't consolidate. Advice please
    #26386868 - 12/17/19 11:05 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey all,

Very new cultivator on my first brf jar attempt looking for advice.

I inoculated exactly two months ago today and my jars just won't consolidate. About a month ago (1 month in) my mycelium was looking great and almost the entire sides of the jar were thick and healthy but the bottoms of the jar had nothing.

I exercised patience and just let them do their thing. Just checked them again last night and they have seemingly stalled. There is almost no growth at all on the bottoms of any of the jars, and just a tiny tiny bit on one of them.

I would imagine it is getting dry in there and that it won't spread anymore, because I am a noob and I don't know any better, and looking for some guidance on what any of you might do.

Thanks for any input

Mark where the myc is at with a sharpie so you can see if it’s still growing.

You’re gonna need to post pics too.

What size/mouth jars?

Cool, good thought. I can tell with 3 of them there hasn't been any growth at all on the bottom. The mycelium meets at the corner of the jar and stops. I will mark them all though and keep an eye.

I will get some pics later once I'm home and post.

I used the recommended size 1/4 pint, short jar, wide mouth yams.

I should note that the average temperature is 60-65f, but most of what I have read makes me think it is still taking longer than it should.

Thank you for the response!

1/4 pint or 1/2 pint??

Yeah even at lower temps two months is a long time, especially if it’s 1/4 pint jar.

The few brf jars I did the myc seemed to take a day or two once it hit the bottom of the jar to actually make it around the bend and underneath.

But I also had one where the middle grew through to the bottom first.

Do they still look the same color as always?

My mistake, they are the 1/2 pint jars! I found the good recommended short ones too, not the tall skinnies.

I'm at work but I'll get a few good pics sent over right when I get home. They all look the same to me and the color doesn't seem off. First set of jars though so I could just be flat out wrong.

Here is a pic of the one that got contaminated just for reference

and the others look just like to good parts of this jar.

Anyways, I'll upload a few pics in a couple hours. Thanks a ton for helping out!

Right on you should be all good then.

Maybe grab some coir and a shoebox for 89cents on the way home and bust the cakes up into it. Should at least triple the yield.

No way dude...

Atleast not in my limited experience...

I just took a cake and shredded it to coir to see what would happen. One cake still got me about 4.5 grams first flush...

I think you can only stretch a cake so far TBH...they are actually very efficient as far as the BE is concerned. You gotta think about how only 1/3 of the volume of that cake is actually brf...

Lol yeah I guess you’d have to use a lot of bulk and let it colonize a while.

I just don’t like cakes man the only interesting part for me was seeing how quickly they shrunk after a flush.

Ya when you think about how much you can get out of a quart of grains vs a quarts worth of brf, the choice is easy to make...

I remember when I was totally flabbergasted when you told me how you had a QP worth of fungus already and one small tub and two trays later I'm in the same boat..

Pics 1 and 3 - 2 and 4 go together.

For some reason the one that's side isn't completed, the bottom attempted to branch out.

These are two months to the day. What gives

Looks like there are some knots forming..
I would guess that the jars are bacterial

Yeah that’s really odd the sides would look so good and nothing on bottom.

I would leave em for now.
By the looks the mycelium seems to be healthy.
Draw a line around the growth on the side of the jar see if it progresses.

In the meantime get started on a new batch of jars.

Keep checking in on the old ones. If the growth is confirmed stalled or pins start to form it's because the mycelium is battling bacterial contamination.

In the case of pins you could try birthing them. Washing off the uncolonized bits. Dunk roll all that good stuff.
Just don't be suprised if they go green.

Wait, the growth on the sides?? I can't tell of anything else growing on the sides

And cool, I like the thought of starting more. I'm kind of limited to one room for them though, it's a small small walk in closet. Should I not house them nesr each other if these do end up contaminated??

Yeah sides look good. I like the straight line where they met.

You should really start a quart of wbs next. Shoebox takes up the same space as fruiting 2 cakes.

10 more days and absolutely no movement on any of them :frown: Fuckin bummer

On one of them I did notice some small worrisome spots showing up. You guys think I should just trash the whole batch and finally start reading up on grain information?

My first jars did the same. Turned out the bottoms were rock hard. Now that I make my own I make sure to fill them loosely.

If you’re gonna toss them I’d break them up into coir and see what happens, nothing to lose.
