Wal-Mart Receipt Checking * 1
    #26386169 - 12/16/19 11:00 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

So recently I noticed that Wal-Mart has replaced their Greeters with acting security that want to check your receipt as you are walking out the store.

How do you feel about this ?

Some people don’t see it as a big deal , not stealing anything ?  Then show your receipt.

Other people feel it’s not right.  A waste of their time and an insinuation of being guilty of shoplifting unless you provide a receipt as proof of purchase.  Even though you just paid for your items. Now there is a secondary line to prove your innocence.

Places like Costco where you have a membership, it’s part of the agreement.  But places like Wal-Mart , it’s actually a voluntary process. But by denying to comply , makes you seem as if you are stealing.

Do they do this at the Walmart you shop at ?

If so,  how do you feel about it ?

the greeters have always done it at the walmarts here, or at least they have for many years now.

they usually only check your receipts if you have stuff that isn't bagged.

i fully support stealing from walmart

I don't do Walmart much, but as long as they check everyone and they're not profiling,
I got no problem. The Waltons gotta eat too.

it seems to be the policy from what i've observed

My local Walmart doesn’t do this.. so what, they check every item on the receipt and match up what’s in your cart? Just seems like that would cause a huge clog at the entrances/exits.

Not every item the whole thing seems kind of random they pick like 2 or 3 items in the cart and verify its on the receipt at least thats what i have had them do.

fuck 'em, leave my stuff alone
if self-checkout is such a problem that it is increasing theft, scale it back

Quote:

An apparent step-up of receipt and shopping bag checks at Walmart has sparked customer complaints, raising concerns about shoppers' rights.

"It was not a request, it was a demand," said Penny Rintoul of Vaughan, Ont., about a recent receipt check just before she exited Walmart with her purchases. She said her local Walmart increased its checks in the spring.

"It's very angering and demeaning."

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) said it's investigating the practice of retailers doing routine security checks at the exit, concerned that the way they're conducted may jeopardize customers' rights.

Michael Bryant, CCLA's executive director and general counsel, said retailers should get consent before checking receipts or bags. And if no consent is provided, he said, customers are under no obligation to comply.

"Their right is to say, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' and walk away," said Bryant.

"Some people feel strongly about their privacy and, in fact, the way our laws work, that privacy and liberty is protected."

Quote:

Paula Fletcher of Renfrew County, Ont., said that in August, a Walmart employee watched as she scanned her groceries at self-checkout, and then insisted on inspecting her receipt and shopping bag.

"She did not make it an option," said Fletcher.

"I don't like being treated as a criminal," she said. "If they don't trust us, they shouldn't have self-checkout."

Walmart's recent addition of self-checkout machines appears to be a driving force behind receipt checks. In response to customer complaints on social media, the retailer has replied repeatedly that it's doing the checks to ensure the self-checkout process "went smoothly" and that all items have been scanned.

Studies suggest that stores adding self-checkouts can experience more theft because thieves believe the risk of getting caught not scanning items is low.

Quote:

She said she reached her limit last month when a Walmart employee demanded to check her receipt, just as she prepared to feed her baby before exiting.

"He's like pouncing, 'You have your receipt?'" said Fraser. "I just [felt] like walking out and being like, 'No, no, call the cops on me.'"

Quote:

So what happens if a retailer calls the cops? Toronto security consultant James Reese said a retailer needs to have evidence of theft for police to take action.

"If they did not see you take something, they cannot come after you just for refusing to show your bags or receipt," he said.

In the 2016 case involving the suspected shoplifter, the judge also wrote that "if a store owner is mistaken and no theft has occurred, their detention of a customer makes them liable for … false imprisonment."

However, shoppers rejecting receipt checks do risk being banned from the store, said Reese.

"That's within the merchant's prerogative."

Quote:

Last week, CBC News did discover signs at several Toronto-area Walmarts which stated, "Please have Receipt ready for Proof of Purchase." But a Toronto criminal lawyer argues that's not good enough.

"Just because there's a sign doesn't mean that someone's read it or understood it," said Anthony Moustacalis.

"Consent does need to be fully informed," he said. "That generally means that you need to know that you have a right to refuse."

There's no question that shoplifting is a problem for retailers, especially when it comes to self-checkout. But retailers still need to play by the rules, even when tackling emerging technologies, said Bryant.

"New technology should never mean giving up your rights."

Quote:

Farr contacted CBC News after he read last week's story about a B.C. man who filed a human rights complaint because the store checked his backpack and not women's purses.

For Farr, who has worked in the security industry for about 25 years as a loss prevention agent, supervisor and now a freelance contractor, the issue isn't about whether the man was discriminated against — it's about the fact that in most cases retailers, by law, aren't allowed to search customers' bags.

"I hate it when I see people having their rights trampled on because [stores] are afraid to lose money," Farr said.

Unless a security guard has witnessed a crime, Farr and other experts say, bag checks could violate a person's Charter rights, which protect against unreasonable search or seizure. There are also provisions under the Criminal Code that outline the rules under which police, security guards and other citizens must follow in order to arrest someone.

The Charter applies to people and institutions representing the state, but Vancouver lawyer Kyla Lee, who has represented clients who were wrongfully accused of theft and detained, says case law suggests that private security guards are sometimes seen as acting on the state's behalf.

"Stores don't have that much power to conduct searches of customers bags or searches of any belongings when they're leaving the store," Lee said.

CBC News contacted Costco, but the store declined to comment.

When they ask to see your receipt tell them to eat a dick and keep walking. The police aren’t going to be their receipt checkers therefore they can’t do shit.

The Walmarts in my area started doing this when they switched to predominantly self-checkout registers. I get flagged pretty often because I look like a scruffy hippy. Depending on my mood and my urgency, I deal with that shit appropriately, I think...never went off on a bag checker at least.

Hey guys I have alot of stories to tell about this. I grew up in Toronto Walmart has the security at the front since I was a teenager. When I was a kid I was poor and used to steal alot.first thers no way for them to check everyone. I used to wait for the door to get busy and just slipt pass. I've even tripped the alarm on purpose and made a gasping noise like some one else took something and left with said item. I grew up stopped stealing and funny enough became loyal customer to them shop there weekly minimum of 120$ a week. One day I was going camping I paid for some groceries little BBQ and a couple bags of ice. The girl said go get them from the freezer by customer service. I did. I go to walk out the door and the security guy wasn't there . He comes running behind me grabs my shoulder and tells me I'm under arrest. I shoved this guy off me and was like no I'm not I'm going camping fuck off. He tried to tell me I stole the ice. I walked him back to the teller and asked her if I paid for the ice. Since then I always crumple up my receipts and drop them on the floor for him. We have a new one a young Indian guy. I think he racist I've only seen him check white people buying lots of stuff. On Friday a coloured guy walked right by him and the alarm whent off and that guy was gone so quick
