How small can you make a 'shoebox' grow tub? Couple questions

Alright guys, I have some mycelium on agar plates I want to try and fruit into the smallest containers possible. To see if its actually mycelium and not some kinda mold.
How thin can you spread your spawn/sub mix into your container of choice, would it being too thin cause issues?
Trying to make separate tubs so I can see if any fruit and just take a clone from it. Thinking of using aluminium cans with the tops cut off and foil over the top until its done colonising.
Or maybe something with more surface area but abit more shallow.
Any advice is appreciated

I’ve fruited a teaspoon of grains with a bit of coir in a shot glass before. You would just put a sandwich baggie upside down over it unsealed with a few holes in it

Have you had a wander around the tupperware section of the supermarket? I have a selection of lunch-boxes (plastic lidded tubs) in various sizes. Tall, narrow tubs could work well, the kind you might store soup or short spaghetti in. I did a single brf-cake to coir in a small tub last year (sadly no pics, got paranoid and deleted them at the time!) and it gave a nice little flush.
Or maybe plastic drinks bottles with the tops cut off?
If you have 1/2 pint mason jars you could prep some grain, PC, and inoculate those with the agar, colonise, and fruit out the top of the jar.

A shot glass, that's brilliant just what I need to do.
Good idea to not have pictures on your phone.
Would you recommend fruiting just the spawn in a 1/2 pint or adding a little coir on top?

I got fruits from an old sour cream container and little bit of leftover spawn...

Still mix the coir and do a very thin top layer for best results no matter the container. You can chip off a little piece of a brick and hydrate with any temp water, kneed it, and squeeze to field capacity so that you aren’t doing a whole bucket tek. IME grain only fruiting can yield mostly small fruits so it’s hard to tell what phenotypes you’re cloning for
Those are some cool lil containers!^^^^ I like using leftover grains from masters after g2g to spawn a low ball glass or something like that. It’s a nice thing to look after and use to gauge the health of the spawn while your receiving jars are colonizing. And you could get yourself a clone before your tubs are barely colonized~

I'm just trying to find out if it is mycelium, and if it is get a clone while I'm at it
Will it not get contaminated if you don't use the bucket and hot water soak? Sounds too good to be true haha.. No hot bucket soak needed
Probally going to fruit them in the jars there in, just empty em out mix with coir and fill em again hmm
I have multiple agar transfers and putting a different piece to each jar(6 250ml jars) to see what might be the mycelium.
I appreciate all the juicy knowledge your saying

If you look in the first post in that thread you will see that Bodhisatta uses a Ziploc bag over various size jars to fruit them.

Helpful link thanks, seems like the little baggie over a small container will do the trick

You don’t need hot water for coir. I do hot water bucket tek bc I like the smell of steamy coir lol. It does expand way better if you use water that is 120F+ but it doesn’t require proper pasteurization. We could prob tell you if it’s cube myc by a photo.

Someone on here did an experiment with hydrating coir with both hot water and room temp and the coir with hot water held like a 1/2C more water....

I just did a experiment with pasteurization. Its probably a complete coincidence but my properly pasteurized coir colonized 8 days before the bucket tekd coir shoeboxes. It was definitely not a controlled experiment and I was using random pe cultures not isolates. One day I will try it controlled to see if there is any relation to faster colonization and proper pasteurization.

So seems like both ways will work, just need to try both

That's some of the transfers I want to use, do you guys think it looks alright?

Wow I am team cooked coir all day but this is some interesting stuff. OP- looks like cube myc! I’d transfer until it looks a little more uniform but it is looking good
