Request for feedback on a growidea
    #26383124 - 12/15/19 11:02 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Dear Shroomery readers and writers.
This is my first post in here, but I have been reading from the sideline for a while and I have learned a lot and saved a lot of time and effort reading about other peoples thoughts and experiences. So thank you all for that=)

I am at the moment considering to set up a cubensis grow. I have made my own grow one time earlier with some succes, but also with a lot of failure. Since then I have been ordering the premade growkits online and been rather happy with that. There is a very high succesrate on the premade kits, allthough the yield and the price per g is less impressive.

Now I am considering to make a small, but significant, step towards growing myself again.

The basic idea is to reuse the plastic containers from the premade growkits, but to use a fruiting chamber or a greenhouse, rather than the plastic bags that the premade growkits come with.

The nice thing about reusing the plastic boxes from the premade kits is, besides economic and environmental reasons, that they can go in an autoclave. So I imagine a somewhat simple process where I put in the preboiled rye substrate and put on a casting layer, put the lid on without sealing, put tinfoil on and then put it all in the autoclave. I have two big autoclaves, so I can do 8-10 boxes at a time. After inoculation the mycelium will colonize the whole thing and we can go straight to fruiting. My goal is to have 30-40 boxes fruiting most of the time.

Any comments to the general lines of the above idea is most welcome=)

In terms of the fruiting process, I was initially thinking to keep it simple and just reuse the plastic bags. The nice thing about that is that I know that it works. The not so nice thing about the bags is that that I am pretty sure that CO2 builds up, which reduces the yield. I am also not a big fan of the handmisting.

Also - I am a builder and I like diy projects, so trying to make a good fruiting chamber or greenhouse is a fun and exciting process in itself.

At the moment I am considering something that is in between a greenhouse and a fruiting chamber. It might be a bit wierd, so this is why I wanted some feedback before starting.

I am imagining to use a growtent, 1x1x2meters or roughly 3.5x3.5x7 feet, with a steel shelf system insides. On the shelves I intent to put fruiting chambers made out of plastic bedrollers. Each fruiting chamber can hold 4 of the plastic boxes from the premade growkits. This gives the growtent a capacity of 40 fruitng kits.

My main reason for wanting to use fruiting chambers, instead of just putting the boxes out "in the free" in the growtent, is for contamination concerns. When contamination comes, it will be limited to one fruiting chamber, and not to the whole greenhouse/growtent.

I have not tried to work with greenhouse setups before, so if some of you peoples have, it would be great to hear if you can follow the above concern?

Another question - I imagine to keep the fruiting chambers humidity up with aquarium pumps. I imagine that one pump can supply 3-4 fruiting chambers. I have not tried using aquarium pumps before, and I have not been able to find good posts/articles on it. So if anyone has good or bad experiences, or can link to a good post about it, it would be great. Thanks.

I like the idea of an aquarium pump, as it will make a slight overpressure in the fruiting chamber, which I imagine will help to force CO2 out. The CO2 gets out through holes in the bottom of the bedrollers, which have micropore tape over them. In this way I hope to get CO2 out in automated way, while keeping contamination from other fruiting chambers out. Does this makes sense?

This is an idea in process, so any feedback or questions are very welcome. I hope my writing makes sense, I have tried to paint a general picture and kept details to a minimum - but would love to discuss details if you have questions.

As someone who did the greenhouse thing my advice is save the greenhouse for edibles and exotics. It’s a lot of wasted effort and extra risk to do that for cubes. Dialing in a greenhouse can be a nightmare and due to the minute vectors and variables from region to region, house to house, few people will be able to help much other than to tell you if it’s too wet or too dry.

Grow a few monotubs to get the feel for what a good grow can look like and to get a handle on spawn production (spawn is the most important thing to learn in this hobby). Then later dick around with a greenhouse if you still want to try it.

Thank you for your replies=)

I have had high succesrate with spawn production earlier. My problems mostly arose when putting the spawn into boxes and applying casting layer. This is one reason that I like the idea of making the boxes with substrate and casting from the beginning and PC´ing it all.

I am also interested in getting experience with pasteurizing dung and coir, but this is another setup.

Any thoughts on forcing out CO2 from fruiting cambers and keeping humidity up with aquarium pumps?

I think you should get proficient at a simple coir verm monotub before you do anything else. Master that an you may learn why so many of the things you are asking are just irrelevant. I’m not trying to limit you either, I am the dude who does crazy zany fucked up grows that I do not recommend to anyone. I fruited a bathtub once. Grew cubes on a bath towel. Ridiculous shit. But I can make them work because of a strong grounding in the fundamentals. Get those fundamentals and you won’t need much help from anyone.

Completely unnecessary. Monotubs are set and forget once you get the hang of dialing them in.

Thank you all for replies. I will read some more on monotub tek.
