Definitely a psilocybe. P. Allenii is my guess, but I'm not that familiar with them so not 100% sure. Nice find, congrats!

Nice first (?) find. Welcome to the Shroomery. Now you know what you're looking for. Having found these, it ought to be easy to also ID cyans, which although cap shape and color differs from allenii, the white stem and blueing effect and texture is very similar...happy hunting.

Thanks for all the help, this is my first find. What is a TI? I can't seem to find that acronym in the forums.

Trusted Identifier is a title handed to some of the members on this site that have immense knowledge of mushroom identification. There is also a trusted cultivator tag for members that have proven to be successful in growing mushrooms and putting out reliable food information

Dried up the smaller caps are brownish, but the largest cap is almost completely black. Other posts I found seem to agree that doesn't mean much except the way they were handled. I washed them and was pretty rough scraping the dirt off. Not sure if that changes the ID at all.

When I first found woodlovers I washed them and they turned really dark blue. I don't wash them now it degrades potency

Washing them is like making mushroom tea that you throw away.

Even a quick dip and shake in some water to get rid of sand/dirt?

I eat the dirt because fuck it, its just dirt.
You can use a toothbrush and gently brush it off, if you dont like the grit.

I give them out to friends and prefer to not have them biting on sand.  They're already way stronger than cubensis so I haven't noticed any negatives of a quick rinse.

I'll know not to wash them that much for next time.
So, since Alan didn't say that it wasn't allenii I'm going to assume that it is a positive ID. Thanks all!

This is something that one of you chemist out there with real lab access should test out for us, I wouldn't think that there would be much indole loss with a light wash, especially since the compounds are inside the cells and rupturing those cells is required to release the actives. It's true that those certain indoles  are water soluble and easily extracted with water but I believe that without any break down of the cells there will be minimal to no loss of active compounds in a short bath cold water, but hot water promotes cellular breakdown and releases more indole in a shorter period of time.

I'm sure gently rinsing would create minimal waste, but why risk it when you could use a brush? I have thought about washing them again because I have found some that had slugs slime on them which is known to cause problems

Dried mushrooms should never be washed in water if you are concerned with retaining potency, fresh samples present an exception.

The most washing that should be done with specimens is one drop of water on your thumb when they are fresh if they have naturally dried out & there is no retained moisture on the samples already.

As you use the grooves in your skin to gently remove all the spores from the surface of caps, dense mats of spores will form & dry on your fingers.

The spore mats on your fingers can carefully wash off into a shot glass with more drops of water added to easily collect the purple spores for your solution.

By freezing these spore solutions you can start a collection that can store well as long as freezing temperatures are retained & applied to landscapes as needed.
