Preserving and storing
    #26382960 - 12/15/19 09:11 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I have my mushrooms in mason jar with two silica gel packets, one in the middle and one on top. One thing I just realized is that whenever I harvested my mushrooms I did not use a tool since I was in a sort of hurried situation. Whenever I harvested I made sure to pick off whatever substrate was attached (coir and vermiculite) and wasn't much, but still bits and pieces were here and there. After dehydrating them and putting them in the mason jars I realized they still have bits of dried substrate on the bottom of them, more like golden granules really of the substrate which was vermiculite and coco coir. Is this going to affect anything when storing? I was planning just to break the little ends of the stem off whenever I decide to ingest, but I just wanted to know is this relatively safe or will affect anything?

Nothing To Worry About, Tiny Amounts Like That Won't Harm You. I've Eaten Specks Of Verm & Perlite On Mushrooms Before, With No Ill Effects.

It Is Better To Scrape, Wipe, Or Brush Off Parts Of The Substrate From The Stems Before Drying, But It Won't Cause Any Harm As Long As They Are 100% Cracker Dry.

However, Never Rinse Or Wash Debris Away. Mushrooms Are Already 90-95% Water, Running Them Under Water Will Make Them Harder To Dry.

Why not rinse? I rinse all the time especially if I have a lot of side or bottom pins and there is coir sticking to the whole thing rinsing is the easiest way to clean them.

The dehydrator takes about the same amount of time to dry either way.

After they’re dried with crap on them it crumbles off but would be a pain in the ass to do the whole jar.

If there is any room in the jar you might try just shaking them a little bit and see if it knocks some of that crap off.

Pins Won't Take On Much Extra Water When Rinsed, But Mature Mushrooms Will.

In My Experience, Running Mushrooms Under Water Is Not A Good Idea, Because It Can Make Them Soggy & Discolored.

It Won't Harm Them In Any Way, But They Probably Won't Look As Nice.

You can clean dried fruits really easily by putting them in a large ziplock and sealing it with some air in it... then push and pull and lightly rub the fruits together.. they’ll clean themselves like a rock tumbler.  Then just tug at one of the corners rapidly to get all the casing material to one corner.. hold it all in the corner and retrieve the clean fruits
