All side pins, what next?

My sub dried out and shrunk. It trapped moisture on the sides and dried out on top. I cased it in hopes of rehydrating the top and creating better growing conditions on top. At this point the first flush is entirely on the sides. I am thinking I will harvest and dunk the whole substrate. When should I harvest the side pins? How can I stop it from happening again on the 2nd flush and encourage growth from the top?

The side pins look like mutants or blobs to me. I’d pick them when you notice them stop growing or they start to get soft. You need to work on your Surface Conditions . What varietie is this?

Thanks for the response and link. I was thinking they looked mutant as well but wasn't entirely sure if they were or if it was because they grew against the wall. These are also the fist mushrooms I have grown. I don't know what strain they are. I cloned them from some dried mushrooms I had. Any tips on what to do to encourage growth on top for the next flush and prevent side pins?

I used those buckets before and didnt like them because as the sub shrinks it lifts up due to the big groove around the bottom that it deep. Just make sure the bottoms are smooth.
Shoeboxes might be a better place to start. Lots of Trusted Cultivators here using shoeboxes.

I did the unmodified tub and introduced straight to fruiting. I left the lid on top of the latches which I found was incorrect. I think the sub may have been on the dry side even though it was at or near field capacity and the way I left the lid allowed too much fae and misting did not keep up with how fast it dried out.

Are you putting the shoeboxes inside a larger tote or fruiting to open air?

I like to dubtub shoeboxes so I can watch them grow. U can also stack them if u use binder clips to hold the top on snug.

wait, do you put that shoebox anywhere? I want to try a shoebox with horse poop, but I want to do it as maintenance free as possible... I failed too many times with my fruiting chambers that i'm going in vitro...

Take it out and put it in a larger tub and just fruit it like a cake. Let them grow from the sides.

I have shelving with lights I keep them on. U can really put them anywhere they get some light though. I’d skip the poo and use coir instead. Just use 1 or 2 quarts of spawn in a box with 2 quarts of coir and call it good. It’s takes little maintenance just make sure your coir is a field capacity.

That's a good idea. It's already a fairly large tub. I don't have a larger tub. What do you think about cutting it in half and putting it in 2 tubs? Should I do that now?
I finally have some pins forming on top. How does that affect my timing for harvesting the sides? It's difficult to figure out when I can't see the veils. I think I should dunk the whole substrate for the next flush. Just trying to figure out the timing of where it will be beneficial vs harmful to the next flush.

I personally wouldn't break it up you didn't have to. When they're side or bottom, the timing isn't quite as crucial as they're generally not able to drop spores most of the time. You just don't want them starting to rot.

I have a small greenhouse because I was also trying to grow some pans. It's set to range between mid 90s to high 70s humidity. How would they do in there if I pulled it out of the tub and just set it on the lid in the greenhouse?

Yeah, that's probably the ticket for you. Anything that gives it some room to grow or it comes out all stringy and calamari like and covered in substrate.

That range might be ok. I'd set to 85-90 and keep an eye on it that it doesn't look too saturated.

The mushrooms on the sides look a little better. There are pins on top!
