Could a thermal camera reveal contams in a mono?
    #26381509 - 12/14/19 03:07 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I've been noticing that contams in a mono runs warmer than clean spawn. When I sweep my little laser guided thermometer on the wall of the mono I see a 1.5f rise in temp where green. I know nothing about thermal googles or cameras, but might it be possible to scan over a handful of tubs to look for uneven heat?

Its mostly just a sciencey curiosity...

Magnification would probably be more useful.

I kinda doubt the images these things would produce could show a degree difference anyway. But it could be a cool thing to walk into a room with many tubs and see hot spots forming. (other than thats a bummer when it happens)

they are way expensive, but check out the flir infrared cameras.  You can set the scale on them to show super small differences in temp.  i've used them looking for hotspots on electrical equipment.

I just read about them. Very cool. Wished I could see one of them pointed at a mono. I've been fascinated with the heat monos put out and what it can tell us. They get warmer at different points of their growth... and then theres contams.

Have used a borrowed flir to check insulation in my home. Belongs to an uncle who uses it for night boating. Works well for those purposes but I don't think that you will be able to consistently see 1.5f difference with a flir. I would guess you'd need at least 10 degrees farenheit difference to see something. Things like handprints on the wall as an example fade rather quickly into background.
