Is this unmodified tub too large for my sub?
    #26378921 - 12/13/19 10:19 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

It's a unmodified 72qt tote with a 8qt sized substrate inside. If I see that it's becoming too dry I'll make a little tent out of a garbage bag so I don't have to go the store and buy a better suited tote size.

Edit
*Day 2 everyone's stretching out after being crushed in that shoebox. These Rusty Whyte pins look like pistachios.

Day 3: I'm getting more aborts than I'd like. In the picture in the middle you can see two of them starting to abort

Day 4: I've learned what not to do from this. My growth is stunted and I'm getting lots of aborts I don't reccommend this setup, however maybe I'm incompetent. I cracked my best guy's head from misting then letting it get too dry.

interesting way to do a humidity chamber:lol::rockon:

i'd have used something smaller but that'll likely work fine. curious why you removed sub from original container it colonized in?

get your sub on a cookie/baking type of rack, them jar props leave a lot of weight unaddressed in the whole center (unless there is one there i cant see). still a rack will allow fruits to poke thru whereas jars are a flat out dead stop.

Good idea! I did notice it bowing in the middle. I took it out of the original container because I had lots of side pins and no top pins. In an attempt to get better looking fruits and to save myself some time harvesting I wanted to move it to a larger container. I also noticed some of my pins growth getting stunted, so hopefully this is a healthier environment.

I am worried about it drying out. I was gonna use 4 quart jars on each corner and then wrap a garbage bag over it with some small holes to create a smaller, more humid environment.

Here's what it looked like in the other container:

Next time u may benefit from a liner, it reduces side pinning and makes harvest easier

You live and you learn, I head if you keep proper surface conditions then a liner doesn't make much of a difference. I'm still relatively new so I'm working on honing in proper conditions.

liners help prevent side pins when done right. also tamping sub down a bit tighter along edges also seems to do well with our limited experience.

make sure your towel is very wet and no need get it level, flat, etc- nice and rough/lumpy so you get good evap from its unevenness. if your rack has lift to it, enough to get it off the towel anyways, then i'd get rid of the jars used to hold it up so high. you just dont want your sub in direct contact with HC floor, whether towel or coir.

maybe use canning lid rings to lift the rack off the towel would work better.

i wouldnt use garbage bag as you mentioned to create for it, just keep eye on tub and sub, if looking dry tub sides give it a good misting. if sub is looking dry, can also mist it- dont leave standing water on sub surface tho and dont mist pins directly once they come in.

Thanks for the advice. I spent a bunch of time dicking around getting this ghetto ass setup, so I'm gonna leave it for the time being and see how it does.

I'm not sure why they're starting to abort. If it's improper conditions or maybe trauma from the transfer. They seemed to be doing good :/

Interesting setup  The reason why it does not work well is because the wet towel does not evaporate the water well. Perlite works much better because it has much more surface area. If you want to fruit trays of shrooms in big containers, I suggest you to look up an SGFC. There is a good example in my signature which I made a few years ago.

I can't argue with your results, it looks like that worked out really well for you. My only gripe with sgfcs is that the perlite can fall through the holes, but I imagine if you rinse it well and don't move it around you'd be fine. Do you still use this method? It seems like it requires a lot of perlite to fruit a couple trays. I'm not sure whether to try that for the second flush or just put it back in the shoebox upside down and case it.

I thought it would help, I realized pretty quickly it was impractical and whether it actually did anything was questionable. So I removed it.

Look in my signature for Chamber of Secrets. I use 90qt totes with pastys hole configuration for his ez dialed monos and a small 1ft led inside. I use pillow cases in the bottom soaked with water and get plenty of humidity and my totes never get over 73F when the house is at 67F.

You will need evaporation to induce pinning so thats what misting is for. πŸ‘

I don’t use SGFC anymore, but I know they work every time and everywhere and the perlite can be reused many times. I changed it when it got really dirty. It does not fall through the holes, maybe some when you fill it.
The good thing in these that there is no dial in, you set it up you are good. However it takes some work so you could just make a Yogi chamber as it’s less work with similar results.

That seems pretty similar to my setup despite the dialed holes. Maybe poor fae is my issue. My lid kinda sucks, I can't flip it upside down otherwise it makes a seal.ive just be cracking it.
