When you prep 5+ blocks in the same container, i use coolers, then verm is a pretty awesome tool to have. Coir blocks vary quite a lot

Why is it a bad idea to squeeze out the excess water? It works just fine. I mean, you might not like it for whatever reason but you can't say that it's a bad idea if it not only works but it couldn't possibly harm anything.
As ayeplus said and others agree there's a much better way. If someone chooses not to buy verm and thus have no better course of action than to squeeze, sure squeeze away, but having to squeeze an overly hydrated substrate is something I haven't done for over five years because adding verm is much much easier.
That's where I'm coming from, relative to other ideas it's not the best idea IMO. I will never again squeeze a overly wet substrate over simply adding more verm, it's a question of better methods, not that one cannot squeeze but it's like a last resort IMO in mine and others situations.
A huge bag of verm is $20 just sayin. Beats squeezing wet substrate.

Ah...yeah I don't use massive amounts of coir, I'm sure pressing that much would be a chore. I have no need to make that much though, I assumed if the OP was doing it by hand he would be in a similar situation.

Verm is great for controlling moisture, but if you dont have verm, you can use tissue paper to transfer some moisture to them or just boil the water out of it for stuff like coir in a pot.
It's a slow job, but it gives a high amount of control.

4 cups is only 1qt. I always use 2qt-ish in my mix.
try adding another 4 cups.

I'm with most in regards to verm. It's a great equalizer for overly wet grains and smaller bulk subs. For larger bulk subs an old pillow case and a spin cycle through the washing machine can works wonders. Sounds funny I know but it works great.
