Making a list, want input!
    #26377779 - 12/12/19 06:17 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but with Christmas coming up, and of course generous family, I'm putting together a list of cactus seeds and cuttings to order in a few months. It just kicked into summer in Australia, the fruits will be popping open shortly since a lot of plants are blooming now and all the Trichocereus seed (from reputable people) will be fresh for the 2020 season!

Last year, I just went through the catalogs and grabbed anything that looked nice. I'm doing something similar this year with both Trichocereus and non-Trichocereus cactus, but I also want input as to what to get as far as potency goes. It shouldn't need to be stated but no sources and no recommendations for plants illegal in the USA or certain backwards states.

For regular cactus, I'm mainly looking for eye catchers, preferably ones that take well to grafting on Pereskiopsis, Dragonfruit or aren't too fussy about growing from seed without grafting.

For Trichocereus, I'm aloof as to what I should look for in terms of names and crosses. Ornamentals are self-explanatory as they look pretty, but specific crosses, clones, and plants, I'm quite ignorant on. I have only a general idea as to what to look for and thats anything Bridgesii, Bolivian and Peruvian Pachnoi, Macrogonus, and Scopulicola.

One of these days I'm going to be able to afford a dream list, but for now its "dream list lite" since my budget is $100. TY in advance!

You should do some research on Aussie clones and make a list of the ones you like the look of. I'd start there because it's difficult to do what you're asking. SAB has clone lists and there's a couple of websites that list known clones and related information.

Simply you should just collect them all. It usually ends up this way in the end. You'll get the bug like all of us.

All of those are great choices and should try and get some cuts now with your cash. They'll root this season and by next you'll have them established.

Seeds aren't as rare as cuts, so there's no real rush now for those. You can start under lights in the winter. Get some plants established to look at while the seeds are growing.

I should add that I'm in USA / USDA zone 8B, if I get any Trichocereus cuttings, they have to be from the USA. I'll spare you the nuances of PPQ forms, fees, and phytosanitary certs, etc, I'm sure you are familiar with them, but seeds usually pass through without issue and Australia has one of the best Trichocereus nurseries. The US has only one such dedicated nursery to my knowledge and I may order some of their clones because of the reputation backing them. For some reason, I completely forgot about that nursery, they don't sell seeds though, only a select few cuttings. Plants are in bloom in OZ right now and the seeds are always high quality from where I shop, so I go through the pain of international purchases.

Winter is a non- issue since I use a heated greenhouse (wood burner). I can keep it hot, but the plants are hard to trick in regards to day length, but those get longer after Dec 15.

As I come across clones, I'll keep reverse searching them on Shroomery and see if anyone has ever commented on them, also comparing pictures to the clone so I'm not getting a fake. As for the plants I listed, those aren't specific enough. Macrogonus alone varies wildly in terms of what the plant looks like, size, and potency, I'm sure there are some varieties that stand above the others. My current Macrogonus grafts look nothing like what I expected but I don't even remember what I ordered and they were probably open pollinated, something I would like to avoid this next time. Its kind of impossible to collect them all because there will always be a new hybrid or cutting count in South America.

We do have the best over here.

Go through my gallery and you will see what Aus has to offer. I've been in the tricho scene for a while now.

Check my gallery and enjoy.

Heated greenhouse, I have two PC logs on grit and I'm still waiting for them to root. The plants are hard to trick due to the day length but after the 15th, those will get longer.

OZ does have some of the best, problem is customs and paperwork. Cuttings need to come from the USA because its less pain, seeds can come from Oz because they slide through customs easier. Its purely a numbers game, you know, bureaucracy.

I order trichs from Australia all the time. Shipping is expensive as fuck but some of my best cuttings I have are imported from Australia. I haven’t had any problems with them coming through customs yet.

With a 100$ budget I’d say get the supplies you need to grow from seed.

There are plenty of good teks to go off of.

If you already have what you need to grow, grab some solid seeds like trich peruvianus var. matucana

You’ll have a tonne of solid plants to trade in no time.

Matucama is on my list for seeds, I'm getting some of what I got last year and some of what I didn't. I completely forgot about trading for 'special' clones. I have several hundred seedlings I'm working on from last year and in about two years they should be big enough to exchange with. Mine didn't grow to the expected 2-3" in their first year because I'm still fairly new to growing seeds.

I'm fairly well stocked in the supply area, I use disposable baking trays with lids to germinate and grow in. You can get a lot of them on the cheap from the dollar stores but its better to get the thicker, higher quality ones in case they need to be moved. Recycled pie pans with covers are also great. Dragged an old mini-blind out of the forest, mini-blinds are awesome for labels since they accept sharpie ink exceptionally well and stand up to years and years of UV abuse. Plastic labels just don't cut it and cost way too much, they seem to go brittle fast. My budget is purely for seeds or cuttings.

I'm stretching out my last coins to make ends meet but I got everything in order for next year. Today is the shortest day according to the Almanac and a lot of my annual seeds are popping up already.
