Gymnopilus?
    #26377251 - 12/12/19 01:45 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

-Growing off a pine stump in some damp woods.

-Smell is weird, but nice. Somewhere between anise & acrylic paint. Not "mushroomy" at all.

-Taste is pretty bitter. Mostly just made my tongue feel dry.

-Not sure if I'll get a spore print from these, I think they're a wee bit too young.

My other guess originally was armillaria, but I dunno....

Gymnopilus sp. from the spectabilis-imperialis clade. Where in the world are you?

North Carolina piedmont.

Also my first (potentially) active wild find! :mushroom2:
(Even if they are not, I'm still pretty stoked)

Gymnopilus junonius, very similar to the morphology and growth habits of the Gymns we see up here in October.

Reporting back, just for information's sake:

Yes, they were definitely active! A mild dose, but decently potent for how little there was. It was a wonderful experience.

Lemme' know if this question is "out of line" with forum rules, but... Would it be wise to check the same spot again in a few days? There were some baby pins that I left alone. Also, what is the likelihood of others being in the same general area? I didn't find any others my first time out, but maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough...

If they're small pins I'd wait like 5 days. But yeah look around for sure. I read your post in that gym thread on TPE. Sounded like a good time.

Check the same spot but also check similar microhabitats in the area. These show up prolifically for a several-week window, typically at tree bases. So keep looking around and you might get lucky-- these can get massive.
