First time (grow kit) 1

Hi folks, my partner got me a grow kit as a gift. It’s a cake in a small unmodified tub in a fruiting bag filled some water. My flat is rather cold, 16-19°C (61-66°F) and after about 3 weeks this is the current state of it.

Things had seemed to be going ok (if very slow) for a while but now I can see fuzzy stems, and there’s signs of contamination too.
Is there anything I can do to improve the situation?
Since I got it, my plan has been to make the best of this kit, hopefully collect spores and then move on to a SGFC and PF Tek next year. Now I’m worried I won’t even get spores of this...

See how dark the caps are. Needs less misting/water and more air. Otherwise not bad for a kit

Mist so it looks like morning dew not like a rain storm
I would recommend cutting small slits into the plastic bag to increase FAE. That should help the shrooms out.

Thanks LogicaL Chaos. I cut the slits as you suggested. First harvest today... so exciting! They’re already in the dehydrator

You said you wanted spores. You could have taken a print off that big one, you can see it has dropped spores onto the stem.
I would take several prints if you can, all you need is a speck of spores in a syringe. I think some people might wait in the hope of getting some huge cap and have a glorious perfect textbook sporeprint. When a small shitty looking light print will do the job.

Damn! very nice harvest for a first time. Did you try to soak the cake for few hours to increase moisten??

I didn't have any kitchen foil to hand when I collected the big ones. I've got 5 caps printing now they're smaller than the first one but should get the job done as you said don't need a perfect huge one.

I only soaked the cake after I first got it for 12 hours as per supplier instructions.
Here's the rest of the first flush, got over 200g wet total which I'm very happy with. Obviously I take no credit for this result seeing how it all came prepackaged in a kit. I'm sure my first DIY attempts will be more patchy!

Now that the first flush is done, I'm looking to go again. However I'm going away for a week on Friday so don't want to leave it in fruiting conditions while I'm gone. Obviously the cake has shrivelled quite a bit. Do yous think I can just keep it in the fridge for a couple weeks as is? Or give it some soaking first?
