Coarse vs fine perlite?
    #26376731 - 12/12/19 08:21 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

What would you recommend?

I use it in my SGFC and I have holes all over the tub, including the bottom so often little bits of perlite fall out and I was wondering if using coarse wasn't as good due to less surface area?

I've also heard people just put about 4" perlite in the bottom and only put holes above the perlite but I've been led to believe you need the airflow throughout to release the moisture the perlite holds :s

Coarse is what you want (I find that the coarse one has smaller crumbs anyway) - coarse 4-5 inch layer within SGFC has plenty surface area.

Getting bottom holes blocked is rather bad.

Thanks, I'd not actually thought about my fine stuff could be blocking the holes in the first place!

On another note, does anybody re-hydrate their perlite inbetween flushes/how often? I know it can last for months but wasn't sure about the moisture content depleting?

When in constant use spraying with the water bottle should be enough - no need to do it between flushes if misting is done enough.

If SGFC is not being used for longer periods cleaning it and drying out perlite can't hurt.
