Anyone else use 4oz Jars for Agar?

So for my second grow i used these small 4oz jars to make BRF cakes, well after I birthed them I just rinsed out the jars and set them aside not cleaning out the jar thoroughly, well fast fwd and im working with agar for the first time, so I pour the left over agar in one of these 4 oz jars i had laying around and closed it, to my surprise a week later it was filled with mycelium (of course with bacteria). This sparked the idea of using these jars for agar to eliminate the use of the petri dishes as these are re usable. I use them with modified plastic lids that i use for my Liquid Cultures. So far I have had success with my first experimental run as well as with the second that I did a week ago.
I seen a couple post of others that have done this as well just thought id share the success i been having with them

Thanks for sharing! I love smaller jars. They're harder to work with at first, but they require a lot less agar and use less space (especially nice if you need PC space for no-pours). One downside is the opaque lids, but it looks like you've got plenty of space to see through the side of the jars.

I love those jars and the fact they’re reusable!

I dont use the jelly jars because the 12 pack is quilted so can't see in them. The 4 pack is clear but expensive as fk. Instead I grab the anchor brand regular mouth half pint jars. Been using these over 4 years now and I like them.

Jelly jars suck for doing agar. If you want something reusable, get reusable petri dishes. They aren't cheap, but they are reusable, and way easier to see into and do stuff with vs. jelly jars.
Again, not cheap, a 12 pack on Amazon for $79: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00141WFNE/
A sound investment if you factor in how annoying jelly jars are to see into or do transfers with.
I bought a 12 pack to try out thinking I would be all "green". But haven't even opened the box yet. The hassle of cleaning and sterilizing reusable containers (jelly jars or petri dishes) out doesn't seem that fun. Disposable petris that come in sterile bags of 20 are what, like $0.13 or $0.14 each?

Ive used jars like this before, on their side. The body of the jar is just a little fatter than the rim, giving you a 1/4 inch or so for the agar's depth.

Now Im into autoclavable petris. They can be pricey but sometimes you see them on eBay for cheap. I just got some polypropylene ones now too that were very reasonably priced.

Out of stock right now but Walmart sells 12 packs of the clear.

Do you know how you keep yours so dry? I've been using these and I've been having a hard time with condensation.

I use half pint wide mouth. They work well enough. I also use and reuse disposable pitris. I just bought 20 glass pitris for $40 and they arrived today. Great deal on Amazon I can share the link if anyone is interested. I've never used them, idk how easy they will be to use yet. They're usually $5 a piece. Can't wait to get off work and check them out.

Im not sure if there is anything in particular that im doing for them to come out that way but i just prep the agar(MEA) and pour it into the jars. I then just add the lids to them and foil at the top before PCing them. I pc them at 15psi for 15 min.
Once im able to remove the jars from the pc I take them out and place them somewhere for the agar to solidify. I just made some more jars today too and they came out just like the ones in the pictures above. I will upload some more photos later.

Just an update, I used these Glass pitris for the first time and I love them. They take up so much less space and I can see what's in them or take pics with the microscope clearly without having to open them. With jars I have to wait until they're in the flow hood to get pics. I only used 5 of them but they take up the same space as one jar and so far the condensation is almost non existent.

Ah nice, I think I saw that deal on amazon.
It's like 40 bucks for twenty, right? So worth it. That's gonna have to be my next mycology purchase.

Hmm..I've been doing mine pretty much the exact same way. I've just got some different lids. I punched some quarter inch holes in them and I'm using micropore tape and tyvek to seal it during PCing. They are also covered in foil. Then I take the tyvek off. I wonder if micropore tape has something to do with it? Is there supposed to be some kind of moisture exchange? Does anybody know?

On amazon I’ve seen 40 5oz jars for $26. The five ounce jars are nice because they’re about 3” wide. How wide are the petris you guys got for $40? I bought a set of 20 for $38 but they were the 60mm ones (tiny), that money would’ve been better spent buying 5oz jars IMO. Live and learn
