Help with Identifying Possible Contamination
    #26373225 - 12/10/19 02:09 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I've used the PF Tek growing method in the past with minimal issues. I used a different brand of brf and vermiculite this time around, and am seeing slightly different results. If this is contamination, it isn't like what I've seen before, and I couldn't quite line it up with the page on here showing all of the common types of contamination:  (https://www.shroomery.org/5276/What-are-common-contaminants-of-the-mushroom-culture).

I attached pictures of each jar to my profile under the Golden Teacher folder, here is what I'm seeing in each:
1 - dark brown spots that almost look like wet verm
2 - light orange areas in a few spots
3 - dark brown spots, similar to jar 1
4 - this one is already showing signs of growth, but there are small orange spots here and there.
5 - this one seems to be okay so far.
6 - small, light orange spots.

I read that if the holes on your jars aren't taped over well enough during sterilization, the lids can rust and leak into the jar which isn't necessarily a cause for alarm. Any input you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

In case anyone is curious, the orange spots above turned out to be metabolites from the mycelium. The cakes are healthy and have already started producing some decent mushrooms in the fruiting chamber.
