We definitely need to start building nuclear again. It should be used as a supplement for solar and wind though. Natural gas and coal should go away.

The earthquake and tsunami that triggered the fukushima event killed over 19,000 people, but the media's attention shifted to the reactor meltdown almost immediately. Why? The MSM thrives on public fear of what is new, unknown, rare, and seemingly unpredictable.
"In a 2017 risk analysis, relying on the metric of potential months of life lost, it determined that unlike Chernobyl, "relocation was unjustified for the 160,000 people relocated after Fukushima", when the potential future deaths from exposure to radiation around Fukushima, would have been much less, if the alternative of the shelter in place protocol had instead been deployed.[278][279]"
Meanwhile, hydroelectric power killed 230,000 people in a single event

I live quite a short distance from a nuclear plant that I'm not especially worried about. The CANDU reactors are supposed to be pretty good I think.

That's pretty much my feelings on the matter too. Doubt it'll happen though.

Only in Cow & Chicken reactors that are being grossly mismanaged.
A lot of scientific and engineering knowledge has to be almost deliberately misapplied for a reactor we build today to meltdown.
I don't like terrestrial use of fission reactors but right now WE MUST.
Package the nuclear waste good, so it can be either dosposed of in space as waste, or refined to yield technologically viable isotopes.
In the 30 years Fusion will need to become viable we have to radically reduce our emissions, so since its advantageous to have a highly populous humanity build fission reactors in great numbers for the interim period between Fossil and Fusion.
Advanced fusion reactors, like borohydride or Helium-3, produce gamma rays when they are turned on and are nonradioactive from the nanosecond they are switched off.
It might even be possible with cold fusion to reach 2D + 2D --> 4He fusion with some exciting kitchen physics If that turns out to be possible and minitiaturizable it makes star trek technology look vapid.
We need to prevent billions of people dying in our lifetime though, so we need to lean on fission till fusion matures.
Fission and fusion work we just need fusion to work without fission and we're ready to roll.
Speaking of, lookie:

The new reactors are pretty redic but because of environmentalist push back and people not having an understanding of the new technology were stuck with like 1.0 shit from the 60s pretty much. Also fusion stuff like asante said.

I voted other because I think it’s really bad but still better than fossil fuels.
If I ruled the world we would invest very heavily in nuclear power because right now time is not on our side and nuclear power would give us some time to figure shit out.

If we truly want to commit to drastic co2 reductions and investments in renewables, and we also want to maintain a dependable power supply, we have very little choice but to expand nuclear substantially.
The interesting thing about nuclear is that it will probably divide opinions for quite some time to come. In the following decades, we will probably figure out if the stagnation of its development since the 1970s was a late step into the only right direction, or if it was a costly and pitiful delay of a sheer necessity. There's just no telling which way the coin will flip.

If what asante said is true (about it sounding like it was sabotage) then more reactors would only mean more targets.....
Edit: we only need air, water, food, and shelter from the elements. Literally everything else is optional so I dont really see the hype for power and space.

The food won’t be there without the energy source.

Good alternative to other energy sources, but are prone to risks during social collapse, direct warfare and natural disaster. No compelling argument in my mind to ban it outright, because the risks involved make it a single factor in the aftermath of one of those three risk variables, whereas those three variables themselves are more likely to be caused by energy crisis and consumption itself which nuclear power is an alleviant of.
Cutting off gas lines and freezing bank accounts for geo-political strategy is a more direct means of getting a nation to comply and conform to the larger international directive, and nuclear power can empower a nation to be self sufficient - so there are barriers to entry in order to keep that power in the hands of those with the power to influence international direction.
As long as oil and international credit accessibility remain a viable means of preventing social collapse and warfare for a nation or faction, there will continue to be forces at play creating barriers of entry to nuclear power, and part of creating these barriers to entry involve persuading everyone on the dangers of allowing entry. Even foregoing nuclear energy yourself in order to rationalize denial to perceived or real competition is a tactical victory if your side has access to the other influences of power.
The dangers of nuclear independence are real from a strategic standpoint if your team holds power, both as energy alone and coupled with nuclear weapons technology. A nation which is self empowered through it's own energy production and also able to separate itself from the international credit system is a stronger threat in conflict, as a larger power in opposition is less able to cut off supply lines to bring the power to the negotiating table.
Nuclear power wont be widely accepted everywhere until systems are put in place and mature enough to ensure that access to nuclear energy does not make a power strategically independent.
