Are these looking okay? 72 hours, lids left on unlatched, 70-75F, light 12/12 These are a bit bigger than the average shoebox and it’s unmodified, I haven’t misted anything.

Looks good! I would leave the lid clamped on and mist till you have droplets but not puddles. Large droplets are ok. Lid left on will likely help spawn run speed but play with it, see what works for you. Leave one lid latched and one resting for a lil experiment!

Looking good so far! After mixing colonized grain with substrate, some people like to add an additional thin layer of pasteurized substrate to the top. Not essential, but it does help the substrate with actively growing mycelium retain moisture better in my experience.

But wouldn’t that suffocate it from GE?

Ok, I’m going to start another one in a few days, I’ll try this

Nope. Don't pack it down tightly. The substrate is porous and thus very permeable to gases, so GE shouldn't be inhibited.

I Iove a 1/3 inch layer of coir on top it seems to help a lot.
Also that first one looks kinda dry towards the middle.

I do that or just about 1/4in. Just enough to cover the grains from open air
Found that by doing a psudocasing like this is good to see if there is bacteria in the spawn. Bacteria will rip into the 1/4in top coat in a day or two where mycelium will take longer to pop up

Give a gentle mist and put the lid on. Leaving the lid latched will help with colonization speed, there is still plenty of gas exchange with the lid on correctly.
Some people put a casing on immediately. Some people case when the sub is fully colonized. I like to case when I'm a couple days from full colonization. You can absolutely still case that tub and it will help help with moisture retention.

If you are just using coir/coir verm then yes bucket is fine.
If your casing has any peat then you need real deal pasteurization.

 Keyword: gentle
Also some people choose not to case at all
