Habitat: Where does it grow? Northern South Carolina. Found in Grassy area in red clay soil near tree line.
Gills: Attached, similar to Portobello. Light brown (moist) darker now dried. Spore print purple/black.
Stem: Stem 1-3", fairly solid, kinda woody. About 6-8mm diameter moist. 3-5mm dry.
Cap: 1" dia. color - gold center fade to tan, texture - smooth, conical/spherical - bell shaped, leaning more towards dome, convex (high middle to low brim when viewed from above). No marked annalus, or veil remnants.
Spore print color: Purple/black
Bruising: No marked bruising.
Mushroom stem tasted dried( small piece chewed, then spit out), had strong earthy flavor reminiscent of black truffle with beefy overtones.

Looks like Hypholoma fasciculare to me, but you're description of the taste is throwing me. They should taste extremely bitter and unpalatable - if you're doing the taste test right?

Do you have any habitat pics? Were the ones in the last pic found in a different cluster? I'm wondering if you have two different species of Hypholoma there because the ones in the last pic look slightly different from the rest. Which ones did you taste?

I will take a habitat pic when I get back from work. All the mushrooms were in a singular cluster. The first pictures were while moist. Latter pictures are post-dehydration.

I can't see your latest pics, but all the pics I can see are Hypholoma species, and I would say Hypholoma fasciculare is likely, and none of them are active.

H. fasciculare. They were growing on a hardwood stump. Don't eat those, they're mildly toxic

Why are you eating these? They're not active as mentioned above. If you want edible mushrooms then just go and buy some at the store.
