My P. allenii grow 1

Found some allenii growing outside Denny's a couple weeks ago. I took a spore print and then plated the spores. I also took colonized wood chips and propagated on cardboard.

I picked colonies from another MS culture and transferred them to their own plate. I'll let them colonize for several weeks and report back.

Update 6/20/20 Happy Solstice all. It's been 6 months since I last updated but I've done a lot in that time. Once those plates were ready I inoculated several grain jars and let them incubate to full colonization. In the meantime I ordered the wood chips and plant bed I would be using. I bought this exact 4pk of chips.

I did a little experiment with the woodchips since I had alder, apple, and hickory. I was curious what would perform best. I weighed out 35 grams of each chip in their own jars, boiled them to hydrate them, then I pressure cooked to sterilize. I then inoculated each jar with 5g of colonized grain and after three weeks it looked like this: Left to right Alder, apple, hickory

As you can see alder was best, hickory was slowest, but apple wasn't very far behind alder. Over all, not much of a difference and you can use whichever wood chip you like. To get my patch started I combined all three types of woodchips in a big pot and hydrated them. Some teks suggest using bleach but I didn't, and I did not sterilize either. Once boiled I let the chips air dry while I prepared the plant bed.

First I added potting soil, and then I planted the parsley and cilantro plant. I shook up a colonized woodchip jar and spread the chips evenly on top of the soil. I then mixed colonized woodchip with the hydrated woodchip I left to air-dry and put that on the bed. Last thing was to put some more hydrated woodchip and sprinkle some soil on top of that.

It has now been three weeks and so far success, there is definitely myc that has colonized the entire chip bed. I can't really dig very deep without breaking up some of the mycelial network gluing the woodchips together. This is the best picture I got. So far so good, I'm not expecting any mushrooms this coming season but let's see what happens. I'll report back when something comes up.

Update 12/26/20 The first flush around late November. They came up just days after our first few nights in the low 30's. I swapped out the cilantro plant with spearmint instead. I think the spearmint really helped with the microclimate.

Yep, right at the entrance of the restaurant. I picked over an ounce from that patch. Funny thing is, this the only woodchip landscape in town that has them growing as far as I know, I've searched everywhere! So I decided to take some spores and get my own grow going. I will also be spreading it around town and get several patches going.

It worked perfectly and took a year. There's still more growing.
