Is this something to worry about?
Put on gloves and a face mask and get rid of that NOW. Iโm no an expert in the field of dangerous pathogens so I very well may be wrong, but that looks like it could possibly be Cryptococcus. It is a toxic yeast, probably the most dangerous of any possible contamination mushroom growers can encounter...it can be deadly.
Have you been around any chickens or wild birds lately, or been exposed to their waste? If you experience any stiffness of the neck or nagging headaches, go to the hospital immediately. I donโt mean to scare you. Take solace in the fact that thereโs a good chance you are okay. It could certainly be something else.

Nah, you can't see them there. I do this now, and have zero contams so far with that method. But I think the air exchange is a little low with the old holes made for full filters, so I'm gonna fix that on the next cycle. Also I've had a few filter squares pop off as silicone seal isn't the best for these pp5 lids. So I'll put a more generous amount on and all around the edge of the filter too...

rolling it around the edge indeed helps prevent filters popping off

Misted the substrate heavily seems to have taken care of it, mycellium metabolites sound right. Will keep a close eye on it the next couple days. Thanks for your help!

IMHO, you need to breathe and walk away from it: stressing yourself, throwing the energy off, negatively impacting your sub by making adjustments before allowing prior adjustments you dont fully understand to have an effect... if it's proper, itll do its thing, if it's not, then no amount of hover-mothering will ensure success... start something new regularly until you're comfortable in your technique: just so you're not loosing a lot of time WHEN things fail: bc they will, bc they do, bc we're human and that's life... in through the nose, out through the mouth

The symptoms are scary as fuck, because a lot of people will attribute that to other things rather than being exposed to fungi. We've had threads here on shroomery where people have gone to ER and they have not been able to think about a fungi infection. If you go ask shroomery people or general population whether or not they feel like they have "more stiff neck than usual" or more "headaches" than usual, a lot of them will say yes.

Bacteria isn't scary, just wash your hands and don't sniff bird shit.
I might isolate a sketchy tub, but if it's fruiting or just dried out I'd let it ride.
It's good to be helpful, but misdiagnosing diseases based on a picture and a description in an amateurs book doesn't help when you worry someone into thinking they are at risk of meningitis which is surely costly and invasive to properly diagnose once they panic and turn to doctors.
Most people have poor; posture, sleeping habits, and diet. All common causes for stiff necks and headaches, not to mention rampant caffiene addiction. Meningitis is not where I would start.

Might be best to just step away from it entirely? Get it out of your house and leave the biohazard work to the professionals
