Supplement to loosen sawdust blocks?

I know that the tried and tested method is mixing sawdust and wood chips (with the addition of nutrients i.e. bran). However I do not have a reliable source for wood chips and was wondering what else may work to break up the sawdust to allow room for more air and less water density. I’m sure I’m not the first to ask this question but I wasn’t entirely sure how to search for this. Any recommendations are appreciated!
My first thought was to use vermiculite since it is much larger than sawdust but I am concerned about its ability to retain and raise the moisture content. I’d like to stay away from perlite, but not for any logical reasons.
Thanks!!

You don't need wood chips, you can use just supplemented sawdust, or just straight sawdust. I wouldn't add perlite nor vermiculite.
Verm and sawdust combo only used when doing cakes.

I suppose you could, but why? It's also dependent upon the species he intends to grow. Don't add straw.

He/she can mix Gypsum or plaster of paris(crystalline oxide free) with water, make a thin layer of it, then crush it roughly after it's dried. I think this'll get the job done? also would it work if OP chopped "organic" cardboard like a pasta strips then layer it with the saw dust?

Jesus. Just use sawdust. There is no need whatsoever to aerate a sawdust substrate.
No plaster, cardboard, straw, space rocks, or bobble heads of a jacked rasta jesus. All you need is sawdust, add woodchips if you want but you don't have it so... add supplementation if you want, but nothing else. Just read a TEK.

Bruh, tell that to OP not me! OP requested if there are any options other than wood chips to help loosen the sawdust blocks... I don't know what OP is up to with the sawdust, but if he wants to try something, then he is FREE. It's just so messed up for me to go like: OP: Supplement to lossen sawdust blocks?.. Me: JESUS!! FOLLOW A TEK
