How much of your USPS mail goes straight in the trash???
    #26366748 - 12/07/19 11:31 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

At least 90% of what's in my mailbox goes straight into the garbage, usually 95%.
Nearly all my bills are paperless auto-pay so aside from packages and a few personal things, everything goes in the trash without even being opened. I don't read past the addressee, anything 'Dear valued neighbor' or 'My Name or current resident' is trash. I don't look at the ads, free papers, any of it. I get monthly color glossy catalogues from places I bought from online, once... 20 years ago, trash.
There should be a way to turn off that unwanted wasteful mail, like an unsubscribe.
It seems like stuff would cost less if they didn't waste money on advertising that nobody even looks at. I mean, c'mon who's getting their checks printed from a company who put a leaflet in the middle of a free paper? Nobody I know.
If we could fix junkmail it would save trees, money and time IMO.
I could easily get by with mail being delivered a 2-3 times per week, maybe even 1x with the option to preview online and pick up at the Post Office if urgent.
Is this possible?
Does the PO need junkmail to exist? I dunno.
Is it like this in countries outside the USA?

I get quite a bit of junk mail, but i put it into the recycling bin not the trash. Most paper is recyclable, except for the waxy paper i think.

I only throw away shredded paper.

Part of me thinks that junk mail creators have a "deal" with USPS and thats why theres so much of it :strokebeard:

It's fucking insane in this country. Never known anything like it. I even got one which had a fake car key in it - still made of metal and plastic, mind you - trying to convince me I'd won a car.

All I could think was how much it must cost to produce and send all that shit, when at the same time millions of people are starving.

I find the whole thing really immoral. I at least make an effort to recycle it all to offset it a little.

It's not like this in other countries.

It will only destroy what you are not.

America is so wasteful when it comes to junk mail. I remember hearing a comedian talk about his British-born Dad complaining about Kmart junk mail and writing a proper, formal letter to them

Wish there was a way to stop it....

I love you my man, but it's a stretch to claim junk mail is a significant contributor to wealth inequality.

With that said, I recycle the 97% that isn't bill related (I still like to keep a paper record for certain things).

If you have a problem with companies producing useless junk in relation to wealth inequality, then I hate to break it to ya JSB, but you have a problem with capitalism.

Yeah, I appreciate the thought behind ''italicized recycling'' but where I live (East Bumfuh Kegypt USA) that's not a thing. Literally a 45 mile drive to a recycling dropoff kinda negates the greenness
Sadly you'd likely be surprised if you knew what becomes of your recycling effort, much of it winds up at the dump or incinerated, especially since China stopped buying as much scrap plastic and metal as they were. They kinda tricked us into saving stuff for them so they could sell it. Now they send it to the dump instead of admitting they no longer want it.

Like 40 years ago A&W had a pork fritter sandwich that was fantastic! That 45 mile drive made it a rare treat.

I used to get a lot of junk mail. It seemed like a big waste of energy and resources so eventually I started looking up the companies' contact information and e-mailing them to remove me from their lists. It took a little while but now I get virtually no junk. Combined with e-statements, most days I don't get any mail at all.
:feelsgoodman:

Apparently there's now an app called PaperKarma where you take a picture of your junk mail and it tries to automatically unsubscribe you. I think that's a great idea and if you don't want to deal with unsubscribing manually I encourage everyone to check it out and reduce your environmental footprint for 2020!

It's not insignificant:

Ever wonder how much junk mail actually costs?  In just one state – Massachusetts, the estimated cost to cities and towns to dispose of the catalogs, flyers, phone books, and other junk mail that gets thrown away every day is $20 million annually.  And to make matters worse, sixty-five percent of the 308,000 tons of junk mail that’s tossed in the garbage every year in Massachusetts isn’t even recycled.  The anti-junk mail group, 41pounds.org (the name is a reference to how much junk mail the average adult receives each year), reports that state and local governments across the country spend over $320 million yearly to get rid of it.  Add to that the 100 million trees harvested and 28 million gallons of water used to produce junk mail, plus the $550 million in transportation costs to haul it around, and you can see how the numbers add up quickly.

And that's not even talking about the initial cost of sending it. You could feed a LOT of people for $870 million.

Cool! One state! What is the exact cost of sending it? Any more sources for other states?

You picked a poor example here; MA is a very wasteful state as it is, despite its high taxes which are supposed to fix roads and infrastructure, of which it's known for being terrible for. Trust me I grew up there it's a shithole lol. It actually hurts your argument because government intervention has made things worse in MA than better; why aren't things better in MA despite high democrat legislation and higher taxes for things?

I only gave it a couple of minutes research. It's not very easy to find the figures and I don't feel the need to go looking for more because it's clear, from those numbers, what the cost must be like if you take the whole country into account.

It's fucking sick. I'm not asking you to agree with me man. I'm just saying how I feel about it.

The only thing I need from the mail are paper bills that I could get paperless bit I dont as a fuck you to the company. flyers or those stupid newspapers I dont fucking order that they throw on my lawn that aren newspapers but a whole roll of fucking flyers with a sheet of newspaper looking flyer wrapped around them. Anyone making those at this point should just be put in fucking jail. As soon as I figure out who's throwing these things on my lawn they're going to get sued of littering. I swear to god they have spotters all over town and wait till I leave them hit me with like 4 of them.
