Will this jar produce fruits if i leave it like this?
    #26366847 - 12/07/19 12:28 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I have some BRF jars that I've been working with and one seemed to colonize fully before the others. After waiting another week i decided to dunk the cake as it had shrunk significantly (about 4-5 weeks from inoculation) I filled up the 1/2 pint jar with water to dunk for about 5 hours until i saw it get fatter and then drained the water out. I threw a pasteurized mixture of cheap potting soil and vermiculite at field capacity on top where the dry vermiculite barrier previously was and after a few days the soil started to colonize. I left the jar just the way it is getting light through the top and covering the outside of the jar with a clean black sock to minimize any side pinning which has seemed to work out so far. Should i leave the jar as is with the sock and ziploc bag and hope that it starts to pin after the casing layer has been fully colonized? I didn't put it in darkness or anything and am wondering if i should try to transfer this to a fruiting chamber of some kind? From what I've read and managed to gather the jar should hold enough humidity and moisture to induce pinning without transferring it but i really don't have enough experience to know. I'm a bit concerned it won't be getting enough FAE since it is still sitting in a glass jar and the only way would be through the top. I am just using this jar as a little experiment but i don't really want to waste it if i don't have to, any help would be appreciated.

Potting soil??? Not sure that was necessary...did you pasteurise it at least?

Verm would’ve been enough. The sock won’t prevent side pinning, side pinning happens because of the micro climate when it shrinks back leaving a gap, this is why we line our tubs as the liner sticks to the sub as it shrinks

What you are going for is called top fruiting

Pierce some holes in the bag for fae

Yeah I read somewhere that potting soil made of peat moss with no added nutrients could be used as a casing layer but maybe that wasn't the best idea.. It was pasturized. I liked the lack of space needed for in-vitro growing but i didn't really want the fruits growing all over the place in the jar so i tried to see if i could do something different but maybe i'm just being too ambitious. Thanks for your advice, i have about 4 little slits cut into the bag. Would removing the sock help with fruiting since it basically is doing nothing right now?

The sock may benefit you if ambient temperature is low. Could possibly be detrimental if temps are too high also

You decide, probably fine as in

Hopefully you have something for xmas...good luck

Well i think it did alright, that was my first jar and i've heard Mazatapecs can be kind of small.. I definitely did nothing to prevent side pinning and ended up with 3.5g dry
